As others have stated, there could be no such thing as a 'total RPMs' meter. RPM is by definition 'per minute', so totaling this number is meaningless, it would be like totaling MPH.
That said, I do believe that in some export market there was a 'total engine hour' meter, or it may have been in a race car. I think I remember seeing one and there being some comment about its being a requirement for something other than US street-driven cars.

There must be someplace it can be checked... I'm almost ready to bet a dinner that such a gage existed on some models or with certain engines..back in the late 50' or early 60'...
Anyone know an e mail address for Chevy Museum .. I'm going to check tonight..

"Back in the Day" I owned a '60 and my best bud owned a '58. Mine did not have it, but my bud's '58 did. And that was before everybody started tampering with their cars and adding factory options to cars that didn't come with them.

I mis-stated .. as you say it is NOT a RPM meter.. it counts the engines rpm...& it displayed the "TOTAL" # or revolutions the engine had made since new... You would be able to look at it and know how many revolutions (TOTAL) the engine had turned.. it DID NOT reset when you shut the car off... it was lifetime revolutions that the engine turned.

The rev counter was used on 1953 to 1958 tachs. 1959 and newer Corvettes didn't used it.

#391177 for 1953-55 6 cyl(with rev counter)
#391178 for 1955-57 8 cyl(with rev counter)
#391179 for 1958 8 cyl hyd lifters(with rev counter)
#391180 & #391181 for 1958 with sold lifters(did not have the rev counter)
Like I said at the beginning of this topic....my 1956 Corvette has the rev counter in the tach and is original.
