I have a 2007 base coupe with automatic. Occasionally while using the paddle shift feature I get the gear numbers in the DIC, then they go away. This has happened 5-6 times in 3 years and a call to Chevy got me no answers as to why this occurred or how to make it happen. Any ideas?
If your C6 also has the HUD, the gear you're currently in should show up in the HUD if you're also using the paddles. If you don't have the HUD, it's my understanding the gears will show up in the DIC. If you've got the tranny in "S" mode, but have not used the paddles since you put it in "S" mode, the gear you're in will not show up anywhere.
I didn't have the NAV option with mine, but possibly, if you have the NAV and some NAV instructions to you are showing up in the HUD, it might be putting the gear in the DIC since the HUD has something else in it.

Our 2009 works that way, even if an actual turn command is not showing on the HUD. Any time I've got an active route in the nav and then use the paddles, the gear shows up in the DIC. If I push one of the other DIC buttons, the gear number disappears until I change gears.
I concur with Gearhead Jim....if the gear is displayed in the HUD...it won't be in the DIC....but if there's something else in the hud (i.e. nav directions), it will be in the DIC.
I personally would love to have the ability to always display the current gear in the DIC (in addition to the HUD as well). And...if I was designing the car, I'd like it to display even when I'm not shifting the car (i.e. when it's in full automatic). That way, you could let the automatic drive efficiently 95% of the time...but just jump in when you would like a quick override.
And I agree with the OP...a bit confusing to see it in the DIC...and then seemingly never being able to get it back.
The explanation about having Nav info in the HUD makes sense since that is what appened the last time I got the gear n umbers inthe DIC. I will duplicate that tomorrow to check it out.
Thank you for your replies.

On my 2008 coupe with no HUD the DIC displays all six gears and highlights the one I am in when in "S" mode. The only exception is if you have the traction control off or comp mode on. In that case the DIC displays the Traction Control off message or the Comp mode ON message.
If you want to get the gear display back up with the traction control off then select a different function such as trip mode the DIC will display that info scroll thru all the views then after the last view, where the DIC would normally go blank you will get the gear display up. You have to remember that traction control is off at that point.

On our 2009, I think you can cancel the TC Off or Comp On by hitting the DIC "Reset" button. The DIC would then display whatever was in there before you turned off the TC or AH, probably including the gear.
Weather stayed nice so I duplicated using NAV and when it gave instructions while using paddle shifters the gear numbers appeared in the DIC and then disappeared after making the suggested turn. 3lt package.
Again thanks for the responses and now I can put away for winter and just have fun putting in new exhaust system and wait for the spring.

Not in the car right now, so I can't test that.
Great, I will try that on the way home, much easier than scrolling thru a whole set of displays.
