I moved from Chicago to a little east of Mesa AZ, now when ever I put in a POI it shows the map from Chicago to Mesa, then when I start moving it then calculates the route but then I don't know if it's the correct route and after your moving you loose half the functions of a barely function GPS?
I have set the home position to be my driveway in Apache Junction AZ and that doesn't seem to work either as I was driving on 60 heading east toward my home but the GPS kept telling to me get off and do a u-turn and head west on 60 away from my home? I have read and re-read the sticky on the NAV system but still can't get it to function properly.
Today I wanted to go to a plumbing supply store in Mesa so I spell the city out and the POI and it says it has it and as I'm driving I realize it's taking me to Phoenix which is not the city I said to go to and it said it was taking me to this supply house in Mesa????? I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I can't get the poor thing to do one thing right for me?
Also how do you cancel a trip once your driving and realize the stupid thing is taking me the wrong direction like when I asked it to take me home?
TIA, ponderous that they have these in so many cars and people end up with a Garmin or Tomtom?
I don't have one, but from what I've read, it's a similar system to the Toyota NAV's. Just a quick suggestion - make sure you have it set to the correct REGION you are in or are searching for a destination in. They can give wacky results if you don't have that set properly.

Plus, make sure you have the correct DVD - Western US!
There are two different DVD discs for the Navigation system. You have the wrong disc in the Nav DVD player. Pop in the western region disc into the DVD player and you will be back on track!
Yes I have the correct DVD in, I think either I need to reset it to factory settings or give up and just use my Garmin. I was trying to give this built in the benefit of the doubt as the first few times I used it it was really counter-intuitive. Like pressing a red button that means go! I guess green was taken? Or the word GO in red would have been better that what looks like a stop sign to start the trip to the wrong place!! But it does find the POI faster than my Garmin and is more forgiving about apostrophes in the name, so it does have it's strengths but wow what you have to put up with to not even take you to the correct city even though it showed I was going to Mesa not Pheonix when I oked the trip????? Really bizarre. Thanks for the tips and I have read the tacky at the top but it just helped me to figure out a few things to get it working, but it doesn't work properly and can't believe they keep putting this crap in new cars! I was in Germany 4 years ago rented a BMW and once they got the American DVD in it was so simple to use even spelling names like Gladdenbockstock, it just took off and told me where to go and could rely on it. I can't imagine a German coming over here and trying to use this NAV unit at the first go! I've had the car for a little over a year now and still can't get it to do what I want it to do.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. According to his profile, though, his car is a 2006; if he's still using his original map DVD that came with the car, I believe it's just a single disc covering the whole country.
No I bought a map update and have either two or three DVD's. I have the right one in and even reset my mirror direction to zone 8 if I recall right. So I think I'm doing things right but I can't get this thing to get me to my destination or to my home. I erased all home positions and reset it using the map to select my present location as home.
I just went to Bed Bath and Beyond as I just moved into a new house and need a few things so I used the Garmin and the NAV to get me there. Garmin said arrive at destination in .6 miles on right. NAV unit wanted me to get on Route 60 again even though I just needed to go under it and then BBB is on the right. So I don't know where it was going to take me on 60 again but both units said 4.2 miles to BBB from where I was so I don't know what the NAV was going to have me do? Probably take me to Phoenix again or get on make a U-turn and then take the exit for the road I was on? Really an odd unit.
I think you need to go in to the menu on the nav and set your region to the number that covers AZ. Your mirror region is something entirely different than your nav region. I don't remember the exact menu on the nav that allows you to change the region setting, but when you get there, it will show a map of the U.S. with the regions outlined. Each region will have a number in it. If you still can't get it, pm me and I'll go out to mine and find the steps to get to the menu. By the way, you left Chicago just in time, it is supposed to get down to 12 degrees next Friday.
I have the region set correctly. It shows Arizona highligted on the map when it shows the regions and I haven't traveled outside of AZ since I got here in July.
Yes Chicago is a good place to be from especially now! 75 degrees here today nice breeze blowing. Can't use the pool as the water in it is a bit chilly!
Thanks everyone for their suggestions. I just went out to see what version the disks were and to triple check that I have the right one in and I do, so????
The problem is probably badly outdated or incorrect maps in the Nav. Both my '05 and my '08 refused to acknowledge streets that have existed for 15 years or more. Plus the Nav. map for the I35 exits is grossly incorrect, evidently the exits were different or didn't exist when the Nav was last updated.
Don't even ask about the "new" toll roads, they don't exist either according to the Nav.
Yes I remember waiting for I-355 being added as the Garmin wouldn't see it until FINALLY they updated it. I have the latest version as far as I can tell. Version 5 is what it's called on the DVD package and when I go to the site to find updates it looks like 5 is the latest but the way they code it maybe I'm reading it wrong. When I first got the car it had a burnt DVD in for maps and only got half of the functions so I paid for the updated DVD's. After that it worked but I didn't use it much other than to have it show the map with north up and the Garmin using the turn to match my turns so at least it had some use but setting a route etc was difficult until I read the sticky on top of this forum. Then it got usable but now finding that it can't direct me even home is a very disappointing.
Make sure you delete all the previous Waypoints from before, if you don't they keep coming up. Mine did the same thing, but once I deleted them and reset my Home destination, it worked fine. It can get frustrating at times, but read through the manual completely, and check out the tutorials on this site, they answer a lot of questions you have, very helpful.
IMO it's obsolete. The graphics suck, the features are lacking, the accuracy is extremely poor. About the only positive thing it has going is the screen size, but the screen itself is obsolete.
I now use Google Nav (free on Android phones.) It updates accuracy in real time, the graphics are crystal clear and the features just keep coming.
It syncs with my phone's contact list, it shows tons of other info (movies, restaurants, etc) if you choose, it does turn-by-turn instruction through the car's stereo... all for free.
To answer your last question first, to cancel a route once you are underway press the menu button to leave the map and go back to the main menu. Once on the main menu select the Route Options button. Once on the Route options menu select the Cancel Guidance button on the lower right. The car will ask you to confirm your choice, say yes.
In reading your first scenario it sounds as if your navigation unit still has a leftover waypoint programmed from the Chicago area. If it does it will continue to try to route you to your new destination in AZ via that waypoint in IL until it is either passed or deleted. To check, do the following:
Return to the main menu.
Select Stored locations.
Select Destination and Waypoints.
Make sure that the screen says 0/5, if not select Del. All.
To raise your confidence in the route that the navigation unit has selected you can always review your route once chosen. To do this return to the main menu and select route options and then Display Route. This will let you review the route that the unit has calculated and see if in fact there are any out of the way guidance bits in there (such as a trip to IL on your way to the store in AZ).

You said you read the sticky but did you READ the sticky for the NAV?
Press the top left button and say "Cancel Destination". The little lady will ask if you are sure you want to cancel the destination. Say "Yes". If you tell it you want to go somewhere and then don't finish the trip it will always route you to that destination first until you finally go there.
Then check your preferences for road type. For example, if you tell it you prefer to go where everyone else goes it will route you onto an Interstate rather than the quick way down the alley. Conversely, if you tell it you want the shortest route it will have you getting off the highway and zigzagging through residential streets if it can save 100 feet. I prefer a Quick route with no ferries or toll roads for most trips. The problem is that this unit is far more powerful for routings than the more user friendly units. You have 48 basic routing preferences in this unit when you combine road types and quick/normal/short. That means it will do what you tell it to do so you need to know what you are telling it to do. A hammer can be used to put a screw through 2 pieces of wood. The Corvette Nav is a 150 piece Craftsman tool set. A lot of people prefer the simplicity of a hammer.
If you really want to start from scratch - Menu / Navigation Setup / Restore System Defaults.

No I read the sticky about indexing the windows and thought that would apply to the NAV system.
I have reset to defaults but someone else suggested I delete all way points. So I'll do that an hope for better results in the future.
There is no doubt the factory nav is highly counter-intuitive. Its built-in logic, that we can't change, also produces goofy routings occasionally.
But after taking many multi-thousand mile cruises with club members who have Garmins and other makers; the C6 factory system seems to do about as well. They all have quirks, just different quirks.
I keep my factory nav because of the HUD interface, theft resistance, and radio-muting during voice commands.
You can't go throuogh Paul's tutorials (on his personal website) in an hour, take a little bit each day and you will be rewarded.
