Default Question about tracking?

Ok i did a search with no luck.

I have a 2010 grand sport.I have a problem that when i change lanes on
a not so flat road or dips in the road,my car pulls an follows the pitches in the road. When i first got the car in North Carolina i drove 8 hours back to maryland.I had to pretty much hold the stearing wheel do to it pulling left and right when i changed lanes.

I was told this is called tracking. I have also heard that it is because of the tires on the front being so wide.I have also heard it is the hard run flats.... Help cause i will be getting some non run flats when the weather breaks any ideas or answers are greatly appreciated.

Between 1989 and 1992, the standard tire was a 275/40/ZR40 on all four corners - this changed in 1993 to a more "narrow" tire in the front and a slightly wider tire in the rear (unless you ordered RPO Z07, which got the 275 tires back on all 4 corners).

The reason for the change, was due to the "tracking" you describe. Really has little or nothing to do with the tire compound. It is the tire width.

I hope this helps.

Have the wheels aligned. May fix the problem and sure won't hurt anything. Sometimes the simple things do wonders.

This tendancy to steer based on road surface is often called tramlining (spelled several different ways). Wide tires emphasize it but the main issue is alignment. My 05 was fine when I got it but started this steering after about six months and got worse. It felt like it was darting left or right when changing lanes or going thru dips in the pavement. The alignment shop found rear had a little toe out (most likely culprit) and right front a bunch more caster than it should have. They corrected it and the tramlining is 99.9% gone. Alignment guy said they see this alot on C6's, they think because the wide wheels and very stiff run flats put a lot of pressure on the alignment bolts so they move a little over time, especially if you hit potholes.

I'd start with a 4 wheel alignment. My 2009 coupe was twitchy when changing lanes, especially under acceleration to pass someone. The alignment totally fixed the issue. In Sept I tracked the car at Spring Mtn and it felt great and stuck like glue under heavy acceleration, braking and cornering.

On the drive home from the MT dealer where I bought my car new, my C6 had a slight tendency to wander to the right.

A week later I went to my local CO dealer and described the car's behavior. They aligned it at no charge under warranty.

Highway tracking has been great since then.

Bottom Line: Sometimes the factory "alignment" is not-so-good. And not just Corvettes. Over the years I've had new cars that needed alignment. Worst was a '96 Camry. Best was an '03 Mach 1.

And keep the tire pressures up to snuff!! Just two pounds lower than the recommended spec can induce tramlining big time.

This seems to be the issue. It does do that my girlfriend thought was was dozzing off.I told he r no the car was doing it.It would dart back and forth when changing lanes on unlevel surfaces .I will try the alingnment.

With narrower tires, it would not be as much of an issue but wide tires are much more sensitive to alignment....you are on the right track.

I think the problem is the type of tire also. I had the same tracking problems on my C5 with Goodyear runflats. I switched to Michelin runflats and the tracking went away. Now with my C6 GS it is tracking also. I will replace those with Michelin runflats when it is due. In the meantime I deal with the problem.
