Eighteen months ago we purchased our new 2009 Coupe, heavily optioned. Sticker was $61,000. We paid $48,500. A good combination of GM incentives and a dealer who really wanted to move that car.
Flash forward to today. The Z51 option is gone, so I'd have to buy a GS. Keep the same option list except add the F55 suspension instead of Z51. According to Edmunds, sticker is now $68,725. Typical Forum dealer price looks to be about $59,500.
The comparison is not exact, but it's close. A new Corvette that is closest to what we bought less than two years ago, now costs $11,000 more.
I know the economy is down and sports car sales a down a lot, but do you suppose the current model/pricing combination has anything to do with the problem?
People have posted about the pricing issue before, but looking at the numbers this evening was a real shocker.
Edit- There may be some incentives available on a new 2011, but I can't find out exactly how much if any.

It was a bit of stretch when I bought my new 09. And the way prices are headed, it's beginning to look like my C6 will be a once-in-a-lifetime new-car purchase.
Makes me wonder if a $60k base C7 will be a relatively low-volume car (~15k units per year) that belongs in a Cadillac dealership.
BTW, I don't see Porsches getting any less expensive.
Somone posted up some unreal numbers of new, never sold 2009 model Corvettes, still sitting on dealer lots...More Z06's than anything as I recall, but each model had relatively high numbers...one would think they would discount those to the bone and mov'em out...Heck, they are two years old now!

I had a 05 3lt vert without z51. I bought my 2lt 10 GS for 51k on a 62k sticker. The GS was worth the extra cash. Wide body, bigger tires, better suspension, and brakes. Get rid of the F55 option and save a couple grand. The GS suspension is just fine , and it is still better than Z51. It is my Z06 with only 436hp, but with a removable roof and auto. No flames needed I know the difference! I won't deny prices increase, but I think the GS is worth the extra cost.
2011 Base corvette coupe includes $950 destination charge msrp $49,900.00
2008 Base corvette coupe includes $825 destination charge msrp $46,225.00
The difference in price is $3,675, but the difference in the standard equipment of the '08 and '11 is redundant steering wheel radio controls, side airbags, and launch control.
The Z51 performance package use to cost $1,695, but now the difference in price between the '11 coupe, and the 2011 GS coupe is $5,840. A $4,145 increase over the price of the Z51 package.
per calm's list of prices, I would think that since you can't get a model that is truly comparably equipped, '09 to '11, it's not accurate to say the new model is a full, $11K more.
Leaving aside the $125 increase in destination charges because it's relatively inconsequential, the two main questions are:
is there a significant value added to you for the base coupe, year over year? in other words, is it worth it?
is there a significant value added to you for the GS package of inclusions over the prior model's base price + Z51 cost?

I was into musclecars during HS and for about 5 years after. Due to marriage, 3 kids, college obligations etc (most of you know the story), I was away from the car scene for 33 years. I just bought my first vette in September, a 2010 Torch Red GS vert. I got a super deal on it but it still wasn't cheap. I absolutely love that car. When you compare it to what else is out there that performs well, the Corvette is still hands down the best bargain going.
Hard to compare pricing on the Base Coupe to the Wide Body Grand Sport which includes more than the Z51 option.
I think the reason it is being compared is people who wanted the Z51 are now forced to move up to a GS. There is no doubt the GS is a great package for the money but it might be overkill for some buyers who would have been just as happy with a base coupe Z51 car.

Local dealer has 09 sitting on lot still. I keep wondering when they will dump it

the price is never the issue (unless you can't afford something). the economy IS the issue. no one talks about price when everything is "good". remember a few years ago when everyone was buying real estate and prices were at historic levels? if they LOWERED the MSRP by 10% they would only sell a few more units. these are "toys", the first thing to go.
I have a 3lt, z51 manual tranny and have thought many times about my next Vette. I will want one soon. I have thought about the Gc and will likely spring for one. However, I do like the narrow body so to me, a comparable Vette for me would be a 3LT with the F55. I may actually end up ordering that since it seems the F55 option is hard to come by on dealer inventory.

People complain about the $5k increase but I can guarantee it costs more than $5k to do a PROPER widebody conversion with all GM parts. So then you get the Z06 brakes, upgraded cooling, dry sump, etc.

Lots of bang for the buck, if you do not want a widebody you can order the coupe in either base or F55 form and add the sways, unless you track the Vette you will not be able to notice much difference and this comes from one who has done this to his Coilovered C5, now you talk about handling.
When we got our 09 I wanted a Z06, wife can not drive MN6 so coupe was the option, if the GS was available I would of snapped it up in a heartbeat as I do like what you get for the added $$, a baby Z with a removable top and the A6 for the wifey
Just out of curiosity, has anyone looked at the price increases from prior years, just to see how they compare? Obviously with the rough economy this kind of thing is getting more attention now, but Corvette pricing has always gone up from year to year. I'd be interested to see how great the difference is, or if it's generally on par with past increases.
A friend of mine use to have a '96 coupe. It was pretty much fully-loaded for that year (though it wasn't the special edition they put out to close C4 production) and he had the original window sticker. I seem to remember it was priced at about $45K. Now a fully-loaded base coupe tops out at almost $70K.
