I have an 05' vert automatic and I sometimes have trouble shifting from park. It is like it is locked. Sometimes if I move the steering wheel up and down I can then shift from park to reverse or drive and sometimes I have to just turn the car off and restart it and then it will shift. It doesn't happen all of the time but just enough to be a major pain. Any ideas what could be causing this? Are there any recalls for this sort of thing? Thanks.
That's very strange behavior. I know my 2006 MT has issues shifting when it's as cold out as it is right now until everything warms up, and I also know that the tranny pre-08 is infamous for being hard to get into 2nd gear.
I can't say that I have a problem getting into 1st though at startup. Again, if everything is cold, it will struggle to get back into 1st after I move out of that gear.
My 06 A6 did this while still under warranty and the dealer replaced the entire shifter. The Tech told me that a micro switch was the real culprit but fot the dealer it was easier to replace the entire assembly.
While waiting for an appointment for the repair I learned a slight slap on the top of the shifter would unlock it.

Good luck.
Thanks. I will try that next time. Also, this problem occurs when parked on a flat surface. I'm sure it would happen when parked on a hill but I have only had it occur when parked in my garage.
A couple of things are possibly happening here. One is timing - on the 05 A4, you need to wait until the computer says it's ready.
And the other is, be sure your foot is on the brake pedal.
There is also the issue of causing the park mechanism to be pinned to itself by parking on an incline, putting it in park, and releasing the foot brake before applying/setting the parking brake.
