Default CB anyone

Looks like I'll be making a number of trips up to the mountains now that we have a cabin so I was thinking about adding an old breaker 19 to the car to help with hidden cops. I have an Escort but sometimes in the old days, a little help from others gives you an edge, especially with hidden on/off and laser. Has anyone else put a CB in their Vette? How did you handle the antenna? Glass mount? How about where to mount inside? Any suggestions and pics would be appreciated.

Rubber ducky signing off..........sorry, couldn't resist that..

CB................are we back in the 70's again? Hmmm... maybe i'll go watch some Welcome Back Kotter since i'm here.

Maybe while your car is in thr shop installing the CB radio they can also add one of those big foot gas pedals.

From a professional "big rigger", there is a mount that clips on the top of the window, then is secured when you close the window. Those antennas don't really get out very well, but well enough to get info. Just don't call anybody a "good buddy", or you might get "accidentally" squeezed, lol.

If I were going to do the CB thing I'd find a hand held one. In fact, I still have one from the 80's. You can see how much use I get out of it.

This should help once you get it installed.

The chatter on the CB isn't what it used to be years ago. You almost can't listen to channel 19 any more. It's full of idiots, trash talking, bad-asses, foul language, etc.

Channel 19 is like the internet...but instead of reading the pissing contests you have to listen to them.

Let us know what antenna you go with

When I was walking around at hot summer nights last July in downtown Sioux Falls, I was surprised by the number of vettes who had CB antennas on their cars. All had various removable antenna.

Seems to make sense when doing a road trip with a group, especially when you get out in the boonies with no cell phone reception.

Like someone above also mentioned CBing has changed a lot in the last couple of decades. The CB traffic just isnt there anymore. When traveling as a group the CB really is the best way to communicate with everyone in the group. I currently use a small coiled metal antenna on the back glass. When not in use I unscrew it and lay it down close to the window or remove the antenna itself. It comes out with just one screw. I remember what someone above said on the antenna that mounts at the top of the glass and is secured where the side window glass meets the top weatherstriping. But I have not been able to find this in years. If someone knows where they are please advise. Then, with the antenna glass mount a handheld will work just fine. A handheld without the glass mount antenna just does not work well at all because the antenna mounted on the handheld is inside the car. Just to much interference to get out very far. And by the way, no one says you need to stay on channel 19. Good Luck...

Exactly correct. Ch 19 is normally a collection of big-mouthed morons.
However, you can get good information if there is an accident or bad road conditions, so we plug ours in for solo road trips, only turn up the volume is something unusual is happening.

Our club uses CB for group cruises. We tried family radio and commercial walkie-talkies because they are so convenient, but side-by-side testing showed that CB has much better range, mostly because of the bigger antennas. CB's don't have dead batteries, wires tipping over your coffee, and can use bigger speakers.

The Ecklers antenna system, also available from Mid-America, is excellent. They are often back-ordered, so buy it well before you need it.

The Cobra 75 wx st unit is by far the favorite around here, speaker and all controls are in the micrphone but I recommend the external speaker, resting on the ridge behind my seat and Velcro'd to the B-Pillar. For power, I use a radio shack cig plug installed on the power cord, plugged into the center console and wires hidden out the back. Slick setup.

I would not put a CB antenna on my Corvette. And I would ABSOLUTELY not mount a CB unit inside. If I Positively, Absolutely....had no Choice but to use a CB it would be a Hand Held Unit. It would receive good enough to find out where the "Bears" are hiding or communicate with the truckers. "10/4 good buddy"

Default I agree

Our club uses CB for group cruises. works great, lets everyone know whats going on, rest stops, gas, emergency stops, pot holes bikes etc.

CB has much better range, mostly because of the bigger antennas.

I use Ant like the one posted above, quick disconnect, very nice.

The Cobra 75 wx st unit is by far the favorite around here, speaker and all controls are in the micrphone but I recommend the external speaker, For power I used "ad a link" fuse and ran wire to behind pass seat and wires hidden out of the way

So where do I find one of those big foot gas pedals? May look pretty neat.....

I did try a hand held from Radio Shack on a trip over the holidays and heard absolutely nothing on I10 from San Antonio to El Paso. The salesman said the hand held just don't work inside a car. However, I even tried it outside when we made a gas stop and nothing. That's why I was going to consider an antenna option. My main purpose is just to get some heads up on popos. Is that still on Ch19? Personally, I am not interested in listening to a bunch of morons talking crap. Just where are the cops. They are notorious on I10.

My experience is that now days, you will get very little information about smokeys on ch 19, and half of what you do get will be wrong.

Hopefully, someone else has a better technique...

Gotta get the proper mud flaps to go with the big foot gas pedal for the full effect:

with people getting $200-$400 a month cell phone bills, I have been wondering when CB would become popular again. Just might have to USB a CB radio into my Kenwood 9140.
Kinda old into new techie deal
