My wife purchased a 1:18 Corvette die cast car with display cover for me as a Christmas gift back in August from Diecastfast.com. It even has a numbered certificate. Imagine my surprise upon opening up the box to find it is defective from the factory (the side mirror refection piece is stuck in the box between the cellophane, and the display box).
My wife calls the company's phone number and discusses the issue and they tell her it's not returnable, nor can they authorize return shipment to the factory to fix it because it only had a 14 day warrantee...thats correct; 14 days! The customer service people were helpful enough to suggest she get a pair of tweezers, and try to pry it out.
I understand how you feel, but normally an oddity like that, in the original packaging from the factory, ups the value! If it's the only numbered unit with that oddity, you could be looking at 2 or 3x the value!

Hmmmm... I could be wrong but this does not sound like an "oddity", more like breakage?

Be warned!!
No offense, but the return policy is pretty clearly stated on the website (I just went to look to see if the "warning" is justified. - it's not)

Hardly. Just because they wrote down a return policy someplace doesn't make the OP unjustified in warning us that he received defective merchandise, and that they stuck to the letter of their policy by not fixing it.

You've learned the first caveat of business.
They make sure they have an out to protect themselves, not to serve you.
Hardly. Just because they clearly posted a return policy on the same website doesn't make the OP unjustified in whining to us that his wife received defective merchandise and did not follow the policy of the purchase location, and the purchase location stuck to the letter of their policy since his wife did not follow the policy.
I fixed your post for you
Had she followed the policy he would have his perfect little toy.

In the event that your model is defective, follow all manufacturer's warranty information. We will provide assistance if this becomes necessary. Please note that minor imperfections on pieces priced under $50, while not common, do occur on some models. We don't pay shipping costs on exchanges and orders are not shipped on approval basis. Again, shipping charges are never refundable!
If you wish to return an item or items for exchange or refund, please follow these instructions:
Document reason for returning the item(s) and whether you wish an exchange or refund. Include the credit card number that you wish to charge additional shipping costs. The item(s) must reach us in a sellable condition, meaning unopened boxes and models in mint condition. For this reason we recommend that you insure your package so you may file a claim if there is damage in transit.
Please note that returns may be assessed a 15% restocking fee. All AUTOart returns are assessed a 20% restocking fee.
Is the mirror reflective piece something you can re-attach? At least you have it-better than totally missing. I have 100's of diecast and invariably ones will arrive with a piece off, likely due to shipping, but possibly poor assembly or packaging. If something I can fix myself, it's certainly easier than the whole exchange deal which could result in out of stock issues or receiving another with even more damage. I realize having to repair something bought as new is not part of the plan, but is the reality of collecting diecast models. I keep many of mine in the original boxes (if see-through style) but open them first to verify condition and if something that definitely requires replacement I address it right away.
I just had to go look at the company's website. I suppose they are selling some interesting items but in their FAQ the whole tone of their wording for things is very negative -- a bad attitude just oozes... Maybe they are smarter at business than I am? I couldn't buy from them.
As William Shatner so famously said, “Get a life!”
I'm sure it would be pretty easy to find 100 people who have the same opinion about your real Vette when you get a little scratch or ding... Don't be an A$$.
It's clear that it's a lousy policy, and you've called even more attention to how lousy it is with your (nasty) remarks.
Whether the policy is lousy is not for me to decide. However, if you purchase something from them you agree to THEIR policies. If they tried to hide there policies (small print) I could see going so far as to warn others about them, but when they have a clear link marked Return Policy on the website, with the policy clearly stated, I find it silly for someone to take the time to post a warning because the company would not take a return of their toy MONTHS past their stated return period.
All of my comments have been factual and none of them were nasty. Just because you don't agree with them does not make them nasty.
