I had a '81 Malibu with a quirky speedometer. I think it had some kind of kink in it. If your problem is temp dependent, how about lube on the speedo cable?

I'm thinking speedo cables went the way of the dinosaurs!! Everything is electronic now, and no lube is gonna help that!

It depends on what you are going to do with that lube. It still might come in good use.

Maybe you were burning rubber out there? Check the connection on the top of the differential for proper seating.

fishintx,

Come to think of it, you're right. And the electronic stuff sucks. I amend my previous recommendation to a loose connection. Sounds lkike a physical/mechanical issue.

Question....Do you remember if the speedo went all the way up and then down when you started the car....if it did not, then I would guess it is a mechanical problem...but if it acted normal on startup, then I would bet on an electrical glitch. Just because there are no speedometer cables anymore and the speedo is electronic does not mean that it can't have a mechanical problem in the gauge.

if the rear wheels spin on takeoff, the speedo will not register. on the dragstrip when launching, mine does this everytime. halfway down the track, it starts registering again. no biggie. with the slick and cold roads this time of year, you may be slipping and not realize it.

This could be a blessing in disguise. If you get pulled over for speeding, you can prove that your speedometer failed and that GM should be held accountable.

I have noticed with a good quick start or 60 ft, the speedo never works until i let off at the end of the 1/4, it has an electronic pickup reading off the ring gear, dont know the reason why it cant pic it up, maybe diferent gear oil,

Personally I would leave it alone. Keep the RPMs under 3000 and put no mileage on your vette.
