Trunk lid release problem

The C6 trunk lid release when activated from the dash release button, the key fob, or the button over the rear license plate fails to fully release the lid. The lid pops partially up but the lock does not let go. Sometimes you can hit the release a second time and it will let go but most times you have to dig a finger under the left corner of the lid and pull up gently while activating one of the release buttons.
I went to the dealer about this a couple years back and they had me wipe the two pistons and rods of the lid with alcohol to clean any debris off them and then add a bit of spray silicone to the rod to decrease friction. This worked for about 6 openings and then the trouble appears again. Most similar cars I have looked at the trunk pops up about an inch or so and fully clears the latch/lock. As I said before mine only pops partially up, about 1/4 inch and remains partially locked so that it cannot be opened without activating the lock a second time as mentioned above.
Do other members have this problem? If so, what was their solution?
Is there a factory fix for this?
I have seen one remedy for this on line and that was to install an additional coiled spring under the lid (ala C1 Vettes) to push it up more forcefully upon the initial activation. This is not an acceptable remedy to me from both the looks and function department.
I have considered replacing the pistons and rods in hopes that fresher equipment would apply the necessary force to lift the lid. I don't want to do this unless I am sure that is the problem and not the lock itself. I am not one to just replace parts until the problem is solved.
I have heard that this is a fairly common problem yet I don't know of anyone else who has it.
TIA
If it's a coupe I don't know if it will work. I never owned a hatchback. I thought they had a pull down motor for the hatch so my plan would be of no value.
