i have a battery tender and have seen posts where forum members use the aux outlet under there armrest to charge the car from instead of wiring directly to the battery?

What kind of battery tender are you using?
I use a CTEK and ordered mine from them.

Melting Slicks
I got mine from eBay.
If you have a CTEK 3300, just be careful when you order your cigarette adaptor, to specify whether it is to be "Comfort Connect" or the old style.
The Comfort Connect plug is black and yellow, and has a unique shape. The old style 3300 charger has a white, rectangular plug, which connects the charger to the battery clips. Your adaptor must have a compatible plug, or it won't connect with the CTEK charger.
My 3300 is the old style. Luckily, the vendor was nice enough to exchange the Comfort Connect plug, which I received, with the old style.
By the way, CTEK stopped selling the old style adaptors some time ago, and sell the Comfort Connect exclusively now.
How does it work? I plug into the AUX port in the console, and it allows me to charge/condition the battery without having to open the hood. The charger sits on an overturned bucket beside the car, which is snug under its cover. Works like a charm!

find a friend who's just even mildly electrically inclined. they'll buy a $2 lighter plug in, and use about 1'-2' of wire, open up the battery tender, clip off the two wires, add on the new wires and lighter plug in and you'll be set.
I watched my friend do it; takes him about 8 minutes if he drinks a beer, 4 if he doesn't.

One piece of info you need - the new plug male goes to the outside of the lighter plug. The new plug female goes to the center post. But don't worry if you get it wrong the first time. The Battery Tender knows that us fallible humans are sometimes going to hook it up backward so it just gives you a "I'm not working" light. No damage is done.

You can buy an adapter with just the cord out the end for $2 at a car parts store and then figure out which is + and - put some shrink tube on the wires solder then shrink the tube on and your set. Don't trust what the package says as I bought mine and it was wired wrong or the text in the documents was wrong. I used a continuity tester and noted what was what. The + is the spring loaded part at the end.
Good luck!
