Default Door lock failure

I had the dreaded door lock failure today but fortunately had read the manual and was able to enter the drivers side after a heart stopping moment when the release cable did not work! After gently pulling on it a few times, but not enough to break anything, the drivers door popped open . I had left the car blocking the driveway with the engine running when I returned to the house to pick up something and could not get back in, could have been really embarrassing. The passenger side door is OK, and the drivers window indexes but the door will not unlock except by using the emergency cables. There is no clicking noise when the door lock button is pressed so I assume it is either a bad push button, solenoid or loose connection. The end result is I dropped it off at the local Chevy dealer this afternoon to have it fixed along with a couple of other minor issues. I do have a 4 year 100,000 miles extended GM warranty. The car is a 2008 base model plus options with 53,000 miles on it, 23,000 of which I put on since I bought it in March last year.

Has anyone had a similar door lock problem that was covered by the GM extended warranty? This will be my first encounter with the dealer, would like to be prepared. I may be able to pick it up late Friday afternoon or Saturday morning, will report on my experience along with the other two minor issues, stay tuned.

This is a common problem, here is a link to a DIY cleaning of the pads.

If the window indexes there is probably nothing wrong with the switch pad. I suspect a sticky solenoid or wiring failure. Doesn't matter at this point since you say it is already at the dealer. Come on back when you have broken rockers, gouges in the door, etc.

I got a call from the dealership - have to wait until Monday for parts. The good news is that parts and labor are covered under the warranty.

Before leaving the car I asked if they were familiar with the cracked rocker panel issue and they claimed they were, so I will be taking a camera with me on Monday and checking everything before driving away. I also asked a local forum member several months ago if he had heard of any bad reports on Corvette service quality ay this dealership and there were none. I have visited the parts store a couple of times for roof lubricant and touch up paint and on both occasions saw a Corvette in for service plus a couple for sale on the lot. Yesterday there were no Corvettes but several Camaros, a sign of the times I guess.

More news on Monday.

I had the same problem and armed with the above info corrected the problem in twenty minutes or so!
Good luck!

I got the Vette back today and everything is in good shape - no cracked rocker panels, scratches etc.

Only minor issue was with the nav system/stereo. All stored stations were lost when the battery was disconnected and the nav system was playing up. It got completely screwed up and according to the display screen I was driving across a lake on the way home. It is an aftermarket Kenwood DNX 5160 still under warranty. I tried resetting and it seems ok now. Maybe more news on this later.

The bill for the door lock came to $408 for parts and labor plus tax. The bill states the left door latch was replaced due to an internal fault. The part number is 88956758 and the description is "Lock 10.470" . I can't believe the cost was $10.47, not sure what that means as the total is shown as $0.00 as it was covered under the extended warranty

I did ask them to check a rubbing noise coming from the rear end on sharp corners at low speed. I knew the fix was was the lube oil change but I did not specifically ask for it in the hope it would be covered under the warranty also. No luck on that, claim it is a maintenance item not a warranty item. The lube oil cost $33.69/quart for 3 quarts, part number 88862624 and $90 for labor, total $191.07. I am sort of OK with that, could have done it myself but not a pleasant job and wanted to try the warranty route first.

The other issue I had fixed was a recoding of the tire pressure sensors. When the tires were changed just before I purchased the car, apparently the front rims were switched left to right, so the DIC indication was reversed. Cost for resetting was $27.00.

The last item was $5.85 for hazardous material, presumably the drained differential fluid. This was a surprise but I guess the customer pays for it one way or another. I normally take used oil to the local recycle center for free.

It was good to be driving it again today, nice and sunny and warm. I was starting to have Corvette withdrawl after just a couple of days.

10.470 may be the part code for the lock. Not part number but part code. GM uses codes as part of their parts system. If you look at a parts manual it will have the parts catergorized by code.

They charged for changing differential fluid which was THEIR idea because you did the right thing and complained about rubbing rather than telling them to change the oil? What happened to the 100K mile, 5 year drive train warranty? If they had found a loose muffler I could understand but isn't the differential part of the drive train? Sounds like one of those dealers that prefer to collect more money from customers than they do from GM for warranty work.

I forgot to say thanks for the link - very useful for future reference. Will try that approach if (when?) I have another door lock problem.

The thing that threw me a statement they made that it was only 3,000 miles short of the 60,000 miles service and it would have to be changed anyway. I did check last night and found it was supposed to be good for 100,000 miles just as you stated.

The Nav system worked fine today so not harm done there either. When I picked the car up I did see another yellow vette in the lot next door, all part of the same dealership. Not sure if it was in for service or what. Yesterday was a good day here for Vettes, saw a yellow C5 vert, a C6 Daytona orange (?) and a red C6 on the way home in addition to the attached pic. The bad news is that I was very nearly rear ended on the way home by a PU truck. The car in front stopped short to allow someone in the lane for a right turn. I braked fairly hard and saw the PU behind lock his wheels and turn on to the grass verge to the right. It was close, he overlapped me by about 1 foot and would have done some real damage.

Here is the bad boy at the dealership:
