I have a 07 z-51 that makes no engine noise when at cold idel, however when i start dirving it (cold engine) it makes a slight knocking noise until the engine warms up. the dealer told me this is due to the all alum eng. Anyone heard of this before??

As you've described it, does sound normal. The noise is not so much from the aluminum engine block construction as it is from the fact that the aluminum does not insulate the noise as well as cast iron does. If the noise is very nominal and goes away when warmed up, then I would say it is most likely normal.
Piston knock or valve noise?
These cars have loud valve trains.. louder at certain times.. and some do have some piston slap until things warm up and expand..
A real loud uneven knock is something to be concerned about for sure..
My 2005 c6 with 15k miles has a ticking noise sounds like a loud exhaust leak from one particular spot sounds kinda low in the car. Only when cold and when the clutch is engaged and starting to put power to the wheels. Noise persistent for the first 5 minutes or so. The noise never returns until the motor is allowed to cool completely down.
my 2005 c6 with 35 k miles started ticking a few days ago. It only does it for thre first five minutes or two to three miles. it is almost like a crackling sound. I think I have narrowed it to the AC compressor clutch or hopefully to a sound made by the belts.
Try to turn the AC on and off and see if the noise lessens. Mine is less with the AC off but there is still some ticking. I hadn't started the car in three weeks and now notice a bit of rust on the smooth side of one of the belt pulleys. A mechanic friend said he has heard similar sounds that he has fixed by cleaning the belts or pulleys. Otherwise I believe it will be the clutch on the AC compressor. But the fact that is dissappears when the car is warm leads me to hope it is dirty belts or pulleys.
