now is best time to have it checked. Won't cost as much checking. If they do end up doing a alignment then you pay for that. if just check should be less.....
Had a 2000 C5 for 9 years and 74,000 miles and never had an alignment done. As I saw it if the tires are wearing evenly and are lasting what is considered reasonable mileage (24,000 miles) I didn't think an alignment was necessary. That being said the front tires on my 08 C6 lasted 20,000 miles and were wearing just a tad more on the inside, rears were wearing evenly and had about another 4000 miles worth of tread on them. Had all 4 replaced and had a front end alignment done. Tire merchant had a readout of before and after alignment. Front was out a good bit. Bottom line if my tires were wearing evenly I wouldn't have an alignment done.
I like the concept of, if the tires are wearing ok, leave it alone. Only trouble is, what looks to be ok, isn't. As swright said above, he got 20K out of his front tires, and when putting on new ones, did an alignment only to find out the front was "...out a good bit." Tells me he could have gotten more out of his tires at $200-$400 each if he'd had an alignment.
Yes, when checked (kind of like the old "headlight needs adjustment" whenever it's checked) usually something WILL need adjustment. Wonder why.....
Maybe it's because an alignment can go out a little or a lot (like swright's) the day after you get one done---RR tracks, big bump/pothole, curb, etc..
Or it could happen two years down the road. Thing is, it's a regular maintenance item that you can choose when to have done. Sooner, and you don't have to get those $200-$400 tires quite as soon, maybe another 4K miles on them which is another 20% (which is what swright got on his rear tires). Later, and you do have to get them sooner.
