Wiper Recall
I just received a $100.00 check from GM for reimbursement for a wiper recall on my '08 coupe.
I used search to see if there is a thread on this - no joy.
Anyone else receive this?

GM is giving $100.00 reembursement for the heated wiper fluid function due to a fire hazard recall. The company that makes the parts is out of business and no parts are available. Maybe thats what yours is about.

That must be for the 5LT version

More Info
Any more info on this would be nice, I did a seach on 2008 Recalls and did not find anything except for the keyless entry recall. Should I be expecting a check for 100 from my dealer?

You sure the 100.00 was for a recall on your Corvette and maybe not on another vehicle you own ?? The only way I've seen the 100.00 given back is when we do the campaign, but have never heard of anybody getting money back for this campaign on a Corvette.

Had the same type units on some of our heavy trucks until they caught on fire! Talk about fast windshield deicing.. I sure understand why the company went out of business!! BTW... I believe these were standard on certain models of Buick!!

Condition
General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2006-2009 model year Buick Lucerne; Cadillac DTS; HUMMER H2; 2008-2009 model year Buick Enclave; Cadillac CTS; 2007-2009 model year Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe; GMC Acadia, Sierra, Yukon, Yukon XL; Saturn OUTLOOK; and 2009 model year Chevrolet Traverse vehicles equipped with a heated washer fluid system (RPO XA7/CHW). A recall was implemented on some vehicles in 2008 to add a fuse to the HWFS control circuit harness to address the potential consequences of a printed circuit board electrical short. However, there have been new reports of thermal incidents on HWFS modules after this improvement was installed. These incidents resulted from a new failure mode attributed to the device’s thermal protection feature. Their significance varies from minor distortion to considerable melting of the plastic around the HWFS fluid chamber. In some circumstances, it is possible for the heated washer module to cause a fire.
Dealers/retailers are to permanently disable and remove the heated washer fluid system and compensate the customer for the loss of the feature.

Wow it's great that GM is proactively attacking this dangerous issue. Shame on GM though for not having a substitute system to restore the feature not just say sorry can't fix it so forget about it. I know its a minor feature but I think they should have a replacement not $100 and have a nice day! IMHO

I have a 2008 Caddy CTS that has this little beauty. When I got the letter, I just laughed. $100 check for an option package that cost a couple of thousand? Yeah, right. I told the dealership that I refused the offer and if they crippled the system my lawyer would be in touch for distruction of my private property. If it catches on fire, I'm going to sue them to recover the price of the entire vehicle and any damages the fire causes to anything else.
The heated fluid was NOT available as a stand-alone option and it sure as hell was not offered for $100.00!

I actually dug in to this situation a little bit. I had an interest because sourcing equipment is what I do for a living, I negotiate the contracts for a major wireless company.
Come to find out, GM used this tiny little company and drove the price they paid for the unit down to a bare minimum from this part. Great for GM, right? WRONG. The problem is that when this little company had a design flaw that caused GM to ask for a recall repalcement, it forced the company directly into bankruptcy. The system was proprietary and they did not secure a compatible or comparable back-up supplier.
One of the first things you learn when you work with suppliers is to make sure they are viable. Second thing you learn is to have an alternate source of product that you can spin up instantly if you need to.
It's crap like this that tanked GM.
