Default Clutch help!!!

I have my 2005 Manual with 30k miles in at the dealership. They have the power tube, tranny, and differential dissembled because of leaks. They recommended that my clutch be replaced since they had everything apart. I don't drive my car that hard and it seems pretty early to replace the clutch. They want roughly $700 for the clutch kit and flywheel and $250 additional to install it.

Does this seem like a typical dealer scam or would you replace it since it's cheaper now than later?

at 30k miles? my last car was a 99 FRC, which of course is different, but not THAT different.. at 80k miles of beating the living **** out of it daily the clutch was still perfect.. If you were not having any problems with the clutch, why pay them to replace a part that should last quite a long time more?

Ask them what the condition of the clutch is and why they are recommending replacement.

My guess is that cost wise it is better to do now while everything is apart versus doing it later and having to take things apart again. As far as parts cost and labor I'd do some shopping and see if they will negotiate any on the prices.

Exactly! I don't rip on the car that hard since I'm afraid of blowing my differential so it seems pointless to replace the clutch. They said the clutch was worn and the flywheel had "chips" off of it. I'm going to the dealership right now to inspect it!

It's been at the dealership for a week already for leaks under the oil pan and two from the differential/transmission....

Since your already there it would be a good idea. Try the LS7 clutch with Ram Aluminum flywheel. its a very nice clutch that will handle 600 hp and feel stock. Its alot cheaper than 700.00 and as for as the labor is concerned it cost a whole lot more to go back and do it later. You should also replace the rear main seal with the updated version, its just about 30.00 more in parts or so.

I talked to Mike from East Coast Performance and his LS7 clutch kit is only $435 but it can't get to me until Tuesday. The dealer said they want to start reassembling the components Saturday GRRRR

I found a TSB 05-07-31-001 for the clutch pedal sticking so hopefully I can claim my car currently does that.

I went to inspect the clutch and it looks like it has roughly .075" depth of clutch to the bottom of the grooves. Does anybody have any photos of a stock clutch?!?

wow, I don't know what to suggest. generally, when it's all apart like that, I'd say yes, do it. but w. only 30K miles on it... is there any independent tech fr. somewhere you can bring in to look at it? maybe call and ask randy at doug rippie about thickness (not too far from you--763-477-9272).

If you plan to keep the car and drive 100,000 miles do the replacement. If your going to trade in 20 or 30 thousand miles just reinstall the used clutch.

I'm trying to figure out how worn my OEM clutch it but I can't seem to find the specifications. The dealer doesn't have them either so I'm pretty frustrated.

Outstanding. That sounds like a great solution. The $250 installation fee sounds a little high but you may not have a choice.

Currently there is nothing under my car... The crank pully was shaking really bad so they're replacing it so the steering rack is out. The transmission and differential are leaking so everything beyond the engine is also out!

The clutch is 100% disassembled right now and they're going to charge me $250 to put in a new one... Since it isn't per the procedure to install a new clutch they have to charge me. I'm sure with the GMPP warranty work it's going to be $4000-5000 but they still need to charge to put in a clutch and remove my headers ($250 also).

I hate Stealerships but at least the leaks and crank pulley are free

I'm very glad to hear you got the clutch you wanted. I think that will be a great choice. I hope that re-assembly goes well and that you are back on the road in no time.

Let me know if I can get you in touch with Customer Assistance at all. Good Luck!

I talked to my service representative at Friendly Chevrolet and he said the TSB 05-07-31-001 which is for the clutch sticking isn't valid for my car. The TSB was for 2005 Corvette's with specific part numbers and my service rep said it was BS and they WILL NOT cover a clutch. What are your thoughts on this? It's almost too late since I'll be providing them a new LS7 clutch tomorrow but it isn't cheap, he's also charging me two additional hours to install it even though the OEM one is fully uninstalled out

GMPP is covering all that work to address a leak? But they won't cover the clutch, if the flywheel has damage, why isn't it being covered? Did you have to fight to get the leak fixed?

Curious to see your experience cause I have GMPP and I have drivetrain issues and i think its incredible that with that protection plan I have to spend $2k to replace a clutch that shouldn't have worn out in the first place, but to find out whats wrong they have to tear it apart like they did with your car.

The Clutch is "NEVER" covered under warranty and the flywheel isn't either... GMPP is covering all the leaks which seemed small but it's been in the shop for over a week!

It's funny to me that they tell me the clutch is worn so I swing by to take a look. It looks a little worn so they give me the option to replace it. I'm going to drop off a LS7 clutch this morning and now they're going to charge me $250 to install it... WHEN THE OTHER ONE IS CURRENTLY UNINSTALLED!!! Why do they have to charge me "It's not procedure to reinstall a new clutch" What a bunch of BS. If there is one scratch on my car I'm not paying my bill. When I went into the dealership last a guy with greasy *** hands was leanding against my black car. I know it's not a huge deal but I'd never lean on my car and with greasy hands COME ON

I guess in this case, its thank goodness for the leaks; because, unless i read it wrong, you saved a whole lot of labor cost by GMPP picking that portion up. I should be so fortunuate.

Good luck - maybe you should go aftermarket on the clutch, or at least upgrade to the LS-9. A beefier clutch might make the difference in the future. One opinion...
