Just bought a car thru the Costco program. It is so easy, just fill out what kind of car and model, and the Costco web site tells you which dealers are in the program. The fleet saleman called, we test drove the car and he gave $500 off invoice. About 6% off window. They also gave an extra $1k because we traded a competitor car in for a total of 10% discount.
Also, have you seen the values of used cars because of the situation in Japan?
I try Costco on a GT-R back when they first came out and it was selling at a $15k add on. I was quoted $18K abover the MSRP by a dealership rep that took Costco customers.
But I hear stories like yourself that got a good deal from the car buying program too. It all depends on how much demand their is for the vehicle you want to buy. High demand - high markup - like the GT-R when it first came out.
It really depends on the car's make/model. I've purchased with the Costco deal in the past and made out well on a car that the dealerships didn't want to bargain below MSRP on. Some models are almost no saving at all (Honda comes to mind).
I've also purchased with the NRA discount and save more than what the Costco deal offered on another Make (Nissan Xterra Pro 4x). The good thing about both is, if the model is selling and the dealers really try to play hardball with numbers, these programs eliminate that aspect.
On my recent GrandSport purchase the NRA discount just about equaled the discount that Tim @ Boardwalk was offering to the forum. Tim was offering my car for $57,008 and the NRA price for the same options was $57,700.
Not bad if you don't have a "Tim" or other dealership locally that works with walk-in customers properly. The programs are very particular about how the pricing works and that they won't try to make you pay more.

By "NRA", are you talking about the National Rifle Association? If so, I am a Life Member and never heard of a car buying service.

Yes, I am also a Benefactor Life Member. If you go to the nrahq.org site and select the member benefits you can see all the discounts/offers your membership can get you..
