Hi everyone,
I need some expert advise on issue that I saw in my 2006 Z51.I have been seeing service fuel system msg for a few weeks now.A few days back while driving ,the fuel tank dial on the odometer panel showed a sudden drop in gas from half tank to 0 alongwith service fuel tank msg. When I filled up the gas tank to full the msg went away.I encountered the same msg again today and I filled up the gas tank to full. The msg went away however the check engine light is on.I did put chevron techron plus when filling up the gas tank today hoping this should fix it (keeping my finger crossed).Anything i should be concerned about?Do I need to wait for the gas tank to get empty along with the techron or is it some sensor issue?I want to avoid making the trip to the dealer.
Try dumping a bottle of Techron Fuel System Cleaner into your tank just prior to your next fill up. Also, make sure your gas cap is sealing well when you put it on...
I made a rookie mistake when I first got my Vette and didn't secure the gas cap properly. It was on but not tight. Got the "fuel system" idiot light and DIC message. Tightened the cap and the message cleared. You will also get this message if the cap is defective. It's where you first need to check - if only because it's a very simple fix.
I had the same problem a few months ago although the check engine light stayed on. It set code 78(large leak in emissions) I made sure the fuel cap was tight and cleared the code. Been ok ever since...
Many thanks for the replies and inputs to roscoe, silvervette, etaylor and milkman.I think the fuel cap is tight (I heard the click when tightening it).I have another bottle of techron which I plan to throw in with the gas fill up and then its due for oil change. We keep you guys posted.Hopefully the check engine light goes away..
This is the first I've heard of this with a C-6. Lots of related C-5 issues and Techron was the usual fix. May I ask what fuel you normally fill up with?
Mine did the exact same thing last year and I took it in. The invoice says that there is a bulletin 05-08-49-027 to program ECM per bulletin. My problem has not come back in over 3K miles.
@Dgrant-I always put chevron or shell oct-91.
@R&L-I will call the dealer tomorrow.
When I tighten the cap it makes clicking noise and can keep rotating even after it is tight set.The cap does not come off though. So not sure if there is any problems with the cap?
My 07 has done the same thing from day 1. It hits 1/2 tank and the gauge goes dead and Low Fuel Service Fuel System. I just keep the canII scanner in the trunk and clear the codes. Don't want to have to pay to change the card.
My '07 does not do this at all...so far. My '99 use to do this all the time. When I was in S. Calif., Chevron gas is what I used but out here, it doesn't exist. Now on the '99, even though I used Techon and Chevron gas with Techron, it continued till I discovered on the TIS website that there was a TSB for this issue for that car, a firmware update. Once I had them do it, there was no more issue. I've not had an issue with the '07 so I've not looked at other possibilities yet and the gas that's available too me here is mostly the ethanol crap and so on.

I had this issue in my 2005. There was a update software calibration to correct this issue, at least for the the 2005 MY. Also, I add a bottle of CHEVRON FUEL SYSTEM TREATMENT PLUS to the fuel fill at each oil change, and I only use Top Tier fuels. No problems.

Thanks everyone (Jimbeaux,vet4les,itshers,dgrant,calemas ters) for the response..A little update ,the check engine light went away yesterday and have not seen it so far.So maybe adding a bottle of chevron tech plus helped. Will wait till the gas is low to see if the service fuel tank msg pops up again. Will keep everyone updated here...
hi everyone,
bad news.I saw the service fuel system msg again yesterday and after filling 4 gallon of gas, fuel gauge display suddenly dropped from half tank to 0.Guess its time to make a trip to the dealership..
@billdog-Can I know how much did it cost to replace the fuel sending unit including labor or did you do it yourself. Also was it a 2006 vette? I think its strange that I would have to replace that at just 60,000 miles!
my fuel sender acted strange for a long time until i had the dealer fix it using software/programming.
but i never had the service fuel system with the fuel sender problem, so i am thinking you also have a bad gas cap.
btw, gas cap turns even when tight/clicking, i turn mine like 3~4 times after each fill up so sometimes people look at me funny.
