With the experiences we have had with being ripped off at the hotel - parking and everything else in Canada I really don't want to come back. By the way I never saw a sign about detectors when I entered the country
Wow, I've overpaid hotels and got a ticket in the US once but I keep coming back. Don't paint the whole country with your negative brush.
Just for your information the following have agreements and I think more have been added since because I know florida does now. I'm going to bet paying the ticket will save money and aggravation in the long run. Good luck and we will miss you ! Eh !!!
Canada:
Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Saskatchewan.
United States of America:
Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennesse, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virgina, Wisconsin, Wyoming and District of Columbia.
Hummm....I've only been in AZ for four years, but never heard anything about detectors being illegal.

Yea, I am not sure what he is saying with that list of States and Provinces, because Alberta is legal and Manitoba is illegal just picking those TWO for examples.
Getting caught with a radar detector here means automatic confiscation. The only exception is if it was in your trunk and turned off. Normally that comes with a nice fine too. 650.00 in quebec !! Maybe you got off easy !!!
got a ticket in quebec for radar detector and the fine was 711$ and they took the detector

He is listing states and provinces that have reciprocal agreements with each other to honor citations issued in each. In other words, they will report the violation to your home state. Usually this will mean that points will be assessed and if the fine is not paid a warrant will be issued.

The confiscation of one's property is pretty high handed in my view. I believe it was something like this going on back in the 18th century that caused us to decide to throw the British out of here about that time. Seems to me that they coud have at lease issued a receipt for the detector and, upon payment of the fine, return it to the owner.
I must say, I am quite surprised. I did know that all of Canada prohibited the use of radar detectors. But I have learned at least two things today.
Not all provinces in Canada prevent the use of radar detectors.
And the mere carrying/transport of a radar detector anywhere in your car, on or off, is illegal and can result in fine, confiscation or both.
That's a wow to me! In other words, it's not only banned from usage, it's a banned product similar to other known banned products.
News to me and not good news.
But let's remember that it's the law. And laws are made by people. People can change the law. But it doesn't sound as if our good friends to the north want to change the law on that one.

Its a list of provinces and states that have agreements together regarding tickets. Nothing to do with radar detectors. Sorry for not being more clear.
Basically these places talk to each other regarding tickets so there is really no escape from paying.
"most states" do not prohibit radar detectors. There are only a couple states that don't allow them.
There is only one state, Virginia and the District of Columbia. DC will confiscate, VA only records the serial number and gives a small fine with no points.
VA will also fold on the radar detector fine if questioned in court with the proper FCC documents.

I agree I travel to the USA lots & have also been ripped off & overcharged too but I keep going back without whinning on a public forum how badly I was treated.
Canada is becoming the ultimate police state. In Ontario if the police catch you squeeling your tires because you took a corner too fast they can tow your car and ticket you for stuntdriving. No questions asked.
I remember a sign coming in from NY stating they are illegal in Canada, at least there was one a few years ago. The border control even asked if I had one (I didn't).
