It's most likely because they will be offering a metallic Black when you order the "Centennial" edition. No restrictions on ordering the "Centennial" edition across the model lineup, so really no reason to offer two versions of black.
I believe it's because the centennial black was so close to the "normal" black that they didn't want a mix-up at the plant with one Vette having panels of two different versions of black. That's the story I heard...

The problem is the real Black guys won't like the Carbon Metallic. I bought my first GMC Acadia in Carbon Metallic only because it isn't available in Black. I had it six months and traded to White Diamond!
Any time you put metallic in Black it makes it..grayish..if that is a word.
One of my bikes is that color. Anyone that orders that color sight unseen, will be in for a surprise.
Not a fan of black but almost everyone else is, cant believe they would leave it out.
There's going to be some splainen to do Lucy

I dont think the SSB's were as popular as the numbers suggest. I think maybe the recent Carbon Editions toward the end of the year inflated the SSB's and IO colors. I know here in this area at the 2 larger Corvette dealers one dealer had one SSB this year and it sat for many many months until sold. He also had 2 IO's. The other dealer never did see an SSB or an IO. In case you are wondering how large these dealers are, one currently has 18 new Corvettes in inventory, the other has 8. Just 2 cents worth from this observer... I just did a quick search on the Jeff Hardy site. It showed there are 234 2011 SSB's in inventory...
If JSB was that low in builds and is a color people (myself included) actually like, can you imagine how few Carlisle Blue will be ordered? That's one color not receiving many positive reviews-myself definitely included on that! The lack of standard black as a color is not going to help '12 sales either, as not everyone likes the metallic black look and the option package that is required.
Nice to see white making a comeback, it's gaining marketshare every year now. It was a top color on the C4, but really fell off a cliff w/ the C5. Really nice looking color on the C6.
The only surprise is why GM dropped leading by a wide margin Black in 2012! Silly people in charge.
Ever thought about the fact that these 'silly' people could have had a good reason for their decision? Like Japan's earth quake and the disaster with the nuclear plant earlier this year?
From everything I've read on the Japan situation producing standard black is not the problem-it's the outsourced (to Japan) metallic content of CRM, CG, and the new Carbon Black that puts them on hold for the time being. I believe it's more a marketing strategy of selling the 100th Centennial package for some more $ and including the special black paint as a part of it, eliminating standard black so the buyer must upgrade if he/she wants black or a variation of it.

What does that have to do with non metallic paint. The issues were with the some tint coat paints/metallics and pearls.
