Well I am just assuming that "it" should move. Typically there is a visual indicator at the "shift lever" that moves from "P", "N", "R", "D" and so on.
I really never payed any attention to mine for the last 13 months of ownership so I am "assuming" the little red/orange "thingey" that is currently sitting at the "P" position and stays there even when the shift lever is moved, should move to indicate what "gear" you are in. More of an agravation that anything.
Sure would be great if the overhead display had the option of showing the gear position. Some cars have it displayed as part of the instrumentation on the dash and you do not have to shife you eyes down to the gear selector to see it.
Being the old fart that I am, I really would not use it a lot as I very seldom do much more that go from park, thru neutral, to reverse or drive and can sense it's position by the "nuge" movement of the car as it seats into that gear. Aside from being old I am also **** and like to see everyting work as it was intended.
Another related question = Is the 05 auto selector the same as the
C-5's?
My thanks to all for any assistance you may provide.
On my '05, each gear I'm in does highlight red. So if you have an '05 and yours doesn't, it's broke.
I drive my A4 like a manual shift, just without a foot pedal clutch. I had the shifter tables re-tuned, have a high stall torque converter and 3.73 gears. I'm always shifting from 2nd, to 3rd, to 4th and back. I look down quite often to verify that I'm in the intended gear. It would be great if I could see that info in the HUD

I wonder if the guys at Dashtronix could make that happen.
Probably be another hot item fro them if they could.
That's a very good photo of the 'workings' of the shifter. I just went out to the garage and checked mine. It does move with the shifter. You obviously have something that came loose or broke off in there.

Don't know if that one feature would be makings for a stand alone product though. Maybe they could bundle it in with some other performance type HUD feature, like a more specific track display package.
