My 1-2 shift is erratic. Sometimes it's pretty crisp and other times it's very sluggish. I know ECS offers a tune for the A6 but wondering if GM does as well
GM doesn't offer anything that isn't "factory", no special performance tunes.
That said, if your '08 is an earlier build it might qualify for a newer version of the TCM software. Before my 3/36 expired this year I had it checked and my late build '08 didn't qualify for any updates.
Check this thread for more info. Good luck but I'm thinking based on your description that you might have something else going on with it.

Are you giving it the same amount of throttle when it happens to shift crisp as when it is sluggish ?

Hop in your vette and come to Chicago this saturday as Doug from ECS will be here tuning cars and you could get your A6 tuned really fast.
I phoned my dealer this morning as I have an 07 A6 and they would not offer any kind of update to my software under the powertrain warranty. I mentioned that I have a problem shifting from 1st to 2nd with the paddleshift while under heavy or full throttle and he said that it is normal for the 07's.

It happens at different throttle inputs.
If I am at very light throttle the shift will be real exagerated and if I am getting on it the shift will almost seem to bang the u-joints.
I'm just wondering if there is something going south in the tranny or this is normal?
It's normal... because the computer in the A6 will try to adapt to your driving habits. A tranny tune will help, but, the computer will still try to think for you. By the way, if the tranny fluid temps are low, it will shift like an old "powerslush". The temps must be above 140 F to start crisper shifts. I'm NOT making this up!
It may be an aberration but a few weeks ago I started driving my 2008 A6 in S mode and competition mode at the same time. At first I didn't notice a difference and then about a week later I started noticing increased throttle and transmission response. I put back to normal settings but the car still responding and shifting better. The only mod i have is a K&N intake which has been on for over a year. I haven't driven the car lately but I hope it stays this way. I am still considering the ECS tune for the PCM and TCM but if it continues to perform this way I may hold off and do something else.
