Default Electrical system died while driving.

Last night while driving home I saw the battery voltage continuously go from 12.3 volts to 0 volts. It jumped back and fourth like 10 times the whole ride home. When it dropped below 8 volts the whole electrical system of the car shut down even the head lights. But the car still ran. I checked the batt terminals and everything was tight no corrosion. About 2 months ago i replaced the batt because the other one went bad. It had inflation on one side.

I had the car towed to the dealer and their corvette "specialist" is going to look at it tomorrow. When the Service advisor called he said Sir your car will be looked at tomorrow, when I drove it around back everything seemed fine. I noticed you have an aftermarket head unit. You know this could void your warranty.

The car was bought Pre Cert w warranty until 2012. I already see them trying to pull a fast one! To try and make me pay

Any suggestions?

What exactly is an after market HEAD UNIT? What is a head unit period?

I would start by having the charging system checked. The symptoms you describe could be do to a bad alternator. The car should be setting codes that can be read by a scan tool which would help in pinning it down.

Oh that's such it's laughable someone would suggest voiding warranty for a different NAV/stereo unit.... I would probably have had a very hard time not strangling some idiot that suggested that one to me! I have a Kenwood in mine...

First off the unit would have had to have been improperly installed from DAY 1! It's highly doubtful that NAV unit is causing problems as you describe. First off they sold you car as I understand it? Now want to question the equipment that was in it when they sold it to you? I really DO NOT think you're going to have a warranty issue because there is a Pioneer unit installed... geezzzzzzzzzzzz

More then likely you have a bad ground or the alternator is shot! Keep us posted but stand your ground.....

had this happen years ago. alternator stopped producing juice. get used to it, i'm on my 4th one in a 05. The system starts shutting down power using options and tells you what it is doing. Kind of like HAL in 2001. By the time I got to dealer, nothing electrical was working, I had to use lever to open door. Then service adjuster slams door shut after getting milage and car continued to run, but fully locked. that's why keeping key w/ fob is a good idea. Car started to boil over as we got back hatch unlocked, door lever pulled and car turned off.

Radios are not what they used to be. No telling how they may be interlocked with some of the operating software of the vehicle.
I am not saying it's not possible to make an update, but it had better be one that is truly intended for the make model in which it is insatlled and had bettter be installed properly. Below I copied a part of a foum
thread by "burtonbl103" dated 12-11-05 conserning static issues on the '05 model radios. Note the part I put in bold where if you were to turn the vehicle "off" during the software update, a NEW NAVIGATION RADIO WILL BE REQUIRED.... Bummer !!!!

The new cars are definately not your father's Oldsmobile ....

ASI Resolution - Poor and/or No Radio Reception, Intermittent Static on FM with Navigational Radio System (Update Radio Software) #05-08-44-014A - (Dec 9, 2005)
Poor and/or No Radio Reception, Intermittent Static on FM with Navigational Radio System (Update Radio Software)
2005 Chevrolet Corvette (Domestic and Export) with Navigation Radio

This bulletin is being revised to provide correction information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 05-08-44-014 (Section 08 -- Body and Accessories).

Condition
Some customers may comment on the following conditions:

• Static is heard on stations with an otherwise strong signal, after the ignition is turned on.

• The radio is unable to stop at specific stations when using the "seek" function.

Correction
DO NOT REPLACE THE RADIO

Important: The software is updated using a CD, not through SPS programming. New software, P/N 15853651, can be obtained from GMSPO. Dealers should retain the service CD for future use.

The software update will do the following:

• Modify the signal interface with the ARS module to correct the reception condition.

• Add an on-screen message to remind the customer that a destination is required before a route can be planned.

• Add MP3 functionality.

The navigation/radio software, P/N 15853651, should be updated using the following procedure:

Important:

• This software can ONLY be used for updating the 2005 Corvette navigation radio, P/N 15263014. Do not use these CDs to update any other vehicle's navigation radio. The radio part number can be verified via the Tech 2®.

• Software CDs and a Tech 2® are required to complete this procedure.

• Use of latex gloves is recommended to avoid fingerprints on the products and/or discs.

If the vehicle is turned "off" during updating, the "software updating" process may not work and a new navigation radio will be required.

Follow the steps below to complete the software update.

Turn the ignition "on" with the engine "off" by holding the ignition switch in "ACC" mode for at least 10 seconds.

Open the tilt screen (navigation screen) to gain access to the DVD drive.

Eject the navigation DVD from the DVD drive (bottom slot).
Important: It may be necessary to close the radio screen for Disc 1 - Navigation to begin operation. If the navigation software version in the navigation radio is the same or higher than v.1312, the software updating will not start.

Insert Disc 1- Navigation software version 1312 into the DVD slot.

"Preparing to Load System Software" is displayed on the screen along with a progress bar. It will take approximately 5 minutes for Disc 1 to load.
After Disc 1 - Navigation has completed the navigation system will automatically restart. Eject disc 1 from the DVD slot. Insert Disc 2 - Audio software version 01.0F into the DVD slot.
Important: Approximately 10-15 seconds after inserting the disc, the screen will go blank. It will appear that the radio has shut down and/or locked up. This is the mode the radio will go into when the software is updating. If the audio software version in the navigation radio is the same as v01.0F, the software updating will not start.

When Disc 2 is completed, the system will automatically restart. It will take approximately 5-10 minutes for the system to restart. Remove Disc 2 - Audio from the DVD drive.
Turn the vehicle off. Open and close the driver's door and wait for 60 seconds.
Turn the vehicle on and reinstall the customer's navigation DVD.
Press the "NAV" button on the navigation radio, then press the "Agree" soft key on the screen.
After the map screen is displayed, touch the map screen the confirm that the map can be scrolled.
Using the Tech 2®, clear any/all DTCs from the radio.

I'm still fairly new around here, and this may be an inappropriate question. However, I see these "Give us an update" posts rather frequently. As a GM CS rep, why don't you PM the OP and intervene to help resolve the issue?

Just wondering. Thanks.

Oh, if I knew where to search for an answer, I would.

Alright here is the follow up. WARNING be prepared!

So I got a call from the dealer on Wed that the car is ready for pick up.

"Good news sir we found a loose +pos wire on the batterey terminal and we relocated you amp wire to pick up power somwhere else in the engine bay" The car is running great and is ready for pick up. We are only going to 1 hr of labor @ 120.00 + your oil change.

I knew the terminals were tight because I checked that when I got the car home the night it died on me. Anyhow I decided to go yesterday pay and pick the car up. When I arrived the car was ready besides the fact it was left outside the whole night, it had grease finger prints on the left rear bumper and had not been cleaned. I kept my mouth shut. When I got into the car my old batterey that they asked me to bring with me "that went bad 2 months ago" was still in the back of the car. I took it out and told them to test it and verify it was bad. He said yes you have a bad cell. So I asked why did you put back it back in my car? They ended up keeping it.

So now im driving to work its now 7:30am i''m on I95 in rush hour and the display shows SERVICE CHARGING SYSTEM I decided I was on 10 miles away from home and 20 away from work so obviously I started to drive home. When I got onto the Turnpike the car completety turns off leaving me helpless on turnpike at rush hour. I get the car over to the left lane and now i'm locked in with no power to even run my hazzards. Its rush hour and cars are blowing by at 80 miles per hr. I crawled to the reaer of the car and pull the door release to get out. But i cant because the moving cars were to close to me. So I wait for about 20 mins before it was safe to try.

I call Allstate and they send a flatbed out to me, then I called the dealer. The guy says "i'm sorry to here about this. I hope its nothing bad that warranty wont cover. When can you bring the car back here?" I reach my boiling and I loose my vioce from yelling at them. He tells me to have the tow company take them the car and they will pay the tow. The driver dropped me off at home because I needed to be at work over 2 hours ago and, proceeds to take the car back to the dealer.

I get conformation that the car arrived at the dealer from the tow driver "noty the dealer".

At around 12:30pm the Dealer calls me and says where did you find this tow company because they are charging us 350.00 to bring us your car. I told him its was my Allstate towing service if you have a problem call them its not my problem. Whats going on with my car?????? "Sir we are working on it".

At 3:00 I get a call that they found a bad alternator "it was working intermittingly" so we are going to replace it. Your car will be ready for pick up on SAT. I asked if they were going to replace the batterey as well and he said no because its good. I said I expect a new factory batterey replacement of the on you left in my trunk because its still under warranty. "but sir the one in there the car is still good" Mind that it has been drained down 3 times. And I had replaced because the factory one went bad 2 months before.

At this point I told them I was going to get my lawyer involved To please not call me anymore untill the hear from my lawyer.

10 mins later he calls and says "sir everyone is gone for the day I cant put the battery in today but everything will be ready for pick up on Monday. Along with a credit of the original $120.00 you paid us.

MONDAY CANNOT GET HERE FAST ENOUGH!!!!!!!

"there is a lot more to the story as far as back and fourth talk but I summed it up"

Glad you got it fixed. Sorry the dealer was so bad at it. The swollen battery should have been a clue. I can't think of anything else that would do that other than overcharging, and the only part of the car that can charge or overcharge is the alternator.

There is a door release on the floor next to each seat. The one in the back is for entry from outside the car.
