I purchased a 2006 coupe Saturday. As normal, the salesman couldn't answer 1/2 my questions about my new ride.
My biggest question is what is the "black box" at the top of the windsheild, on the inside of the car? It's just to the right of the rearview mirror. It's about 1" x 1' x 12"
To be more precise, it's the Onstar antenna and maybe some minor Onstar electronic components.
The main Onstar module is hidden somewhere in your car, varies from year to year.
You can remove the antenna box and/or pull the Onstar fuse, it seems like you lose only the Onstar and (if you pull the fuse) the voice commands for nav.
If you actually remove the main Onstar module, the car won't start, at least for some years.

I know you guys are smarter then my salesman.
Thanks in advance.
Seriously obnoxious how little dealers know about Vettes... But it is on star. Thing is protruding and ugly. Considering I am too frugal to use on star I wish it wasn't there and have considered removing it...

My Onstar sleeps with the fishes.
My wife didn't like the "in your face" location of the box, and I'm not interested in Onstar. So I removed it, tucked the wires up under the trim, and put the box in my rear cubbyhole in case I ever want to re-activate it.
Removal is usually accomplished by pushing it firmly to the right about an inch, that frees the box from the mounting "fingers" on the windshield. Disconnect wires and put it away.
My box would not come loose by pushing; so I had to wait for a warm day, put a thick dowel against the left side of the box, and smack it a couple of times with a hammer. No damage.
My Valentine radar detector is now mounted into the top W/S trim where the Onstar box used to be, remote indicator on top of the steering column. Works well for me.
I actually like and use OnStar but I hate the box too. Anyone know if the new mirrors they are selling have integrated antenna? If so, maybe that is the direction they will take with future cars.
The black box does not contain the OnStar system. It contains the car's cell phone, cell phone antenna, and GPS antenna used for the OnStar system. The OnStar module (VCIM Module) itself is located in the rear of the car beneath the carpet in the floor just ahead of the storage cubby on the passenger side (base coupe).

I had no idea it would be this easy. I thought it was glued and would have to be removed with a hair dryer. Looks like I will be doing this next chance i get! Thanks
You also may want to consider a different dealer when you need to service your car, especially if their service department is anything like their sales dept.

Thank you. That box is the module. The antennas ARE in the rear view mirrors as it was explained to me at BG assembly plant. The other radio antennas are in the rear fascia. This was in 09 when I did the plant tour so it could be different today. The xm module (coupes) is behind driver inside fender well and verts behind waterfall.
Why do so many people on this forum buy Corvettes from dealers or salespeople who have no idea what they are selling? It's kind of like going to a GP for a specialized medical condtion;how stupid is that? Even if they had the only car in the world that I wanted, I wouldn't buy it from a clueless salesperson.
When I went to pick up my Vette at the dealer my salesman was not available as his wife was having surgery that day. The owner of the dealership handled the delivery with the warning from my salesman "you don't have to explain anything to him, he knows more about the Vette than you do"!!!
Here is where you find the answer to anything Corvette!!!

The XM satellite radio antennas are the ones that are located in the outside rearview mirrors ('06 and later models - '05 is a "wart" located on the halo). The windshield black box contains the cell phone, cell phone antenna, and the GPS antenna for the OnStar system. The VCIM (OnStar Module) is not located in that black box; for most it is located in the rear cargo area beneath the carpet. For earlier models it was located under the passenger seat. For cars equipped with the factory nav system, that antenna is located beneath the dash pad on top of the center left AC duct.

Exactly what I was saying; even the owner is clueless.
