Default Notchy Automatic Transmission when Cold

There are tons of posts here about MANUAL transmissions being notchy and rough when the transmission fluid is cold. Is this also common with AUTOMATIC transmissions? (My auto downshifts roughly into first gear for the first 2-3 stops when fluid is cold, then is normal for the rest of the day). Is this a cause for concern, or a rather normal thing to get used to?

Doesn't ANYONE ELSE have this issue with the automatic, and be willing to say something about it? I mean, it's a really noticeable thing. Having just got the car, I don't want to leave it with the dealer for 2-3 days if I don't have to.

I have a 2010 GS A6 and sometimes it does the thing as yours on a down shift to first. Not sure if this should be considered normal, however.

Ramilian, mine does it every morning when cold. Let me know if you get it diagnosed. I called the dealer today and they sounded clueless.

Don't worry about it. All mechanical devices function better once their lubrication heats up.

amazing. it's normal. I think you need an automatic. You have hundreds of hp going through the trans...it's a piece of heavy mechanical equipment....

Sorry, I'm stealing forum words because it's so difficult to describe automotive sounds, lol.

Perhaps it's more of a CLUNK sound as it drops to it's lowest gear at a stop sign. Tomorrow I'm going to see if it does it with the paddle shifter.

ramilian and JimmyLee – since I can’t diagnose anything over the internet, I’d suggest speaking with your dealership if you feel that this isn’t a normal condition. Feel free to send me a PM if you have any other questions.

Thanks,
Laura

Not when coming to a stop I hope.

My 07 A6 never does that and I have 75k on it.
