Default Burning Oil

I have a 2009 Z51 that burns a quart of oil every few thousand miles. Is this normal? I've had two oil pumps go out in the last 18 months, so I don't know if I have a further problem, just wanted to check to see what others have experienced. Thanks!

I'm going to guess that the two pumps going out caused additional damage that is causing the additional oil to burn. Sounds like it's time for a tear down and rebuild.

My LS6 & 7 engines both burned about a qt every 4 or 5k miles. My new LS9 may be as well but it might be a little early to say for sure as I only have 6k miles so far.

My 07 with 75K does not burn 1/3 of that in 7,000 miles.
None of my C6's burned any oil to speak of.

I will get a lot of flack for saying it but; you may want to do a search on catch cans and you will find several threads on the amount of oil sucked into the intake. Should you install one it will not reduce you oil consumption but will indicate how much is being burned without it being an indication of "engine wear". The more WOT, the more oil being sucked into the intake. So bring on the Catch Can nay sayers, it's inevitable.

I hadn't emptied my catch can in a while and looked in it the other day. It was almost full and it is a relatively big can. The sad thing is that I know it isn't catching all of the oil either because when I installed it I had the top half of the engine apart and cleaned everything. The intake started showing oil inside not too long after putting everything back together with the can in place.

At least the catch can keeps some of it out of the intake.

I was out on a run on Sunday with friends and we pushed our cars a bit. One of them, who had checked his oil level before the cruise as well as me, called me and said he lost a quart of oil on his 08 Z06 after the run (we drove about 7 hours, about 250 miles up and down the coast) and for me to let him know if I burned oil. I checked mine but I burned/lost none. I always stay on top of checking to see if I burn or not and with 55k miles on my 05 I've never burned or lost any oil and I push my car plenty.

todm,
I'm sorry to hear you're having problems with your Z51. After reading your post on the forums, I'd suggest taking your car to the local dealership to have it checked out. It might suggest a a potential problem. I'd suggest going to your dealership and having an Oil Consumption test ran just to be safe.

Chevrolet Customer Service,
Justin

Our 2006 LS2 burned about a qt every 15k miles, mostly moderate draving but occasionally really ripping it.

Our 2009 LS3 burns so little I can't really calculate it, seems like about a qt every 25k miles but i change it long before that.
