I went by Rick Hendricks’s this morning to look at a Grand Sport that they have that I might be able to be talked into trading for, equipped just like would have ordered one.
But applied to the windshield was the old “Optional Equipment” sticker that they use to try to stick it to the buyer with:
Nitrogen fill 125.00
Tinted windows 495.00
Door edge guards 295.00
Wheel locks 95.00
$1000.00
Very disappointing.
Yeah, that's all fluff to boost the profit margin. What's worse is the "dealer service fee" that a lot of dealers add on to the sale. I've seen $295 all the way to $895, and it is paying for virtually nothing!!!!!!
They are a business. They are in business to make money. Every business employs tactics to make money.
Be a smart customer. Do your research. Exercise your choice to buy elsewhere. Quit whining.
I agree with you to a point, but if no one speaks up over this kinda stuff, it will never change. This thread just might, and I say might, make a dealer think twice before they try to charge someone $125 to put nitrogen in tires that wasn't asked for.
We were watching reruns of old Twilight Zones this week and one of them was about a used car salesman that had to tell the truth about everything. Pretty funny for sure, and goes to show that car dealers had that kind of reputation way back then already.
The reason they have dealer add ons is because some people would prefer to see the car with the items already on it. They can wrap it up in their loan, they can see/touch/hear whatever it may be. That is a big selling factor for a lot of uneducated car buyers. I just had a repair order come across my desk that the customer bought a new Scion XB and purchased over $10k in accessories. The guy wanted everything done by the dealer. All the accessories he bought will be covered by his factory warranty. Could he have gotten everything a lot cheaper elsewhere... of course. Different strokes for different folks. If you are an educated car buyer you know as well as the rest of us do that add ons turn into free add ons really quick!
The so called "dealer options" just gives them a higher starting point to begin negotiations. Unfortunately, there are still way too many uneducated buyers out there that will fall for the car salesmen scams so dealerships continue to use them.
I will not give dealerships who do this sort of thing my service business and I certainly would not buy a car from them. The sad thing is that there are damn few (if any) dealerships that do not employ some sort of scam or ripoff to pad the profit margin.
Admin fees for so called "title/paperwork" processing is the most common scam. I challenge anyone to find a dealership that does not either have a doc fee or the hard sell "business mgr" who will pressure you to buy extended warranties, window etching, fabric guard and a host of other wasteful products.
I stopped going to dealerships years ago. I do all my negotiations via email and the phone and don't step one foot inside a dealership until the deal is done.

I always wondered why these " reputable" car companies use total sleaze ***** to sell their product. I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. I bought a family car from Duval Mazda in Jacksonville and it had all that dealer crap on it. I had to work hard to get past that crap. That was my last new car, the hell with all of them. Anyway the new vettes have that stupid antenna on top, hate it, don't want one, a vette is not a camaro, don't treat it as such. My 07 will probably be the latest model I will own. Buy used, save money and hassle.

Dealers employ hundreds of thousands of people across the country. They are in a business to make money just like everyone else. The companies who preload those products, depend on the dealer business. If you stop those preloads, you shut down the small businesses who depend on them.
All you have to do is tell the dealer you dont want them. Its that simple. You dont need to act like they are stealing from you. That is why they are called "Optional Equipment".
i don't mind the dealer add ons as long as you see them up front on the sticker, its not like they are hiding it on you
what steams me is the outrageous dealer doc fees that some dealers will put in there as you are signing the paperwork. They already have you hooked emotionally to the car then they stick you with some ridiculous number. i know my doc fees at boardwalk were $55 and i can live with that, but some charge $500 + which is an outrage.
Good lord, this thread is ridiculous. Some of the hate is just sad.
You guys really need to become more educated about the car business. It is BY FAR one of the most regulated businesses in the country. EVERY move they make is scrutinized. From the way in which they display the sticker on the window (They are breaking a federal law if its not there), to the way in which they approach you with the initial offer, all the way that the finance manager gives you a "Menu" to choose from in the finance office. They are now even videotaping the finance office.
This is not the 80's and 90's. Its not like it used to be.

No, it wont.. Why do you think there is Nitrogen offered?? Because the customers started asking for it. It is one of the MOST requested customer pays in the service department, nest to regular service.

There are no federal regulations on dealer fee's. Some states have a maximum cap, and others have flat fee's; but most states dont regulate it at all. The problem is, is it is against the law to remove a dealer fee from a contract. If the dealer charges 1 person, he must charge them ALL. If he picks and chooses, he puts himself in a position that would allow the States Atty General Office to force him to repay ALL previous dealer fee's.
Personally, I feel they should mandate one set dealeer admin fee. This would stop it. FWIW, the sales dept of the dealership hates the fee just as much. They dont get paid on it, and it is one of the main obsticles they have to overcome.

Peggy buys the same exact car from the same dealer the exact same day for 65k. Unfortunately for Peggy, she does not have the negotiating skills that John has.
Peggy just overpaid (ripped off, stolen from) 5k.
This happens all the time.
With that said. I wished I owned a dealership so I can get away with this all day long, every day of the week.

When it's added before the purchase it's really not optional anymore, is it?

Nitrogen fills IMO is one of the biggest scams there is and you know it. Over one years time the only added benefit was 1.3 pounds less of air loss on passenger car tires. Nothing to get excited about or worth paying extra for.
