I have an 07 A6 with 29K miles on it that has piston slap. Would you leave it alone or let the dealer replace the engine under warranty? Would the new engine reduce the value of the car?

I'd be willing to bet GM won't approve an engine replace under warranty for piston slap.
LS motors are kinda known for it in the first place and I don't think there's any evidence it shortens the life of the motor (as long as it goes away once things warm up a bit)
Ouch, you guys are brutal. Just asking a simple question.
Not brutal - they just sound honest to me. Many on this forum overvalue the "originality" issue with these cars. I baby mine but had no problem drilling 6 holes in the rear to mount a ZR1 spoiler.
It's most likely fine. My Silverado has had that for 245,000 miles. No problem.
But eventually that engine is going to fail because of that piston slap...LOL
And I agree and also doubt that GM is going to authorize a new engine for piston slap. Whether the dealership is busy or not is irrelevant. They are not part of the decision process. They will be required to send the old engine back to GM for inspection, so they can't even exaggerate the problem in order to help you out.
It is a noise that sounds like a rattling piston...sort of the same sound that a diesel engine makes. It can be caused by too much clearance in the cylinder and sometimes will go away when the engine warms up and clearances tighten.
Our 2001 sounded like a diesel for the first couple of minutes after starting, still sounded that way and running perfectly when traded at 66k miles.
Our 2001 Tahoe has suffered from piston slap for all of it's 73,000 mile life, hasn't hurt a thing. The knocking sound goes away totally in a minute or two.
