I heard there is an update disk for fixing firmware issues on the '05's and those are at a dealer only. The normal NAV disks are available from www.gmnavdisc.com Someone here might sell you an older set such as I have the previous version, I think it was ver 5. There are few changes from year to year that are apparent but supposedly they add %20 more data each year.

I know which disks your talking about. They are not the Nav map upgrade. I'd like to get a copy of them too. If you get them could you pass them on to me and I can pass them on to anyone else needing them. I know there is a thread about DIY making them but I'm not real good at that kinda stuff.

As Eric said, the discs for the firmware update are very different from the map discs that are updated approximately annually and that can be purchased for around $200. The firmware update is relevant for 2005s ONLY and corrects the static that sometimes occurs while listening to FM. In these instances, momentarily switching to AM and then back to FM gets rid of the static. The bigger win from doing the firmware update, though, is that it provides the head unit with MP3 disc playability. It's great being able to play CDs with over eight hours of music on them!

A couple of important things to remember before doing the firmware update:
  1. It should only be done on 2005 models.
  2. It should only be performed ONCE. Attempting to perform the update on a head unit that has already received it could cause permanent damage to the head unit.
  3. The instructions MUST be followed to the letter; any deviation could cause permanent damage to the head unit.
Here are the complete instructions:

2005: Service Bulletin: Poor and/or No Radio Reception, Intermittent Static on FM with Navigational
Radio System (Update Radio Software)

Service Bulletin #: 05-08-44-014A
Date: December 9, 2005
Subject: ASI Resolution - Poor and/or No Radio Reception, Intermittent Static on FM with Navigational Radio
System (Update Radio Software)
Model(s): 2005 Chevrolet Corvette (Domestic and Export) with Navigation Radio
Condition
Some customers may comment on the following conditions:
" Static is heard on stations with an otherwise strong signal, after the ignition is turned on.
" The radio is unable to stop at specific stations when using the "seek" function.
Correction
DO NOT REPLACE THE RADIO
Important: The software is updated using a CD, not through SPS programming. New software, P/N
15853651, can be obtained from GMSPO. Dealers should retain the service CD for future use.
The software update will do the following:
" Modify the signal interface with the ARS module to correct the reception condition.
" Add an on-screen message to remind the customer that a destination is required before a route can be
planned.
" Add MP3 functionality.
The navigation/radio software, P/N 15853651, should be updated using the following procedure:
Important:
" This software can ONLY be used for updating the 2005 Corvette navigation radio, P/N 15263014. Do not
use these CDs to update any other vehicle's navigation radio. The radio part number can be verified via the
Tech 2®.
" Software CDs and a Tech 2® are required to complete this procedure.
" Use of latex gloves is recommended to avoid fingerprints on the products and/or discs.
" If the vehicle is turned "off" during updating, the "software updating" process may not work and a new
navigation radio will be required.
Follow the steps below to complete the software update.
Turn the ignition "on" with the engine "off" by holding the ignition switch in "ACC" mode for at least 10
seconds.
Open the tilt screen (navigation screen) to gain access to the DVD drive.
Eject the navigation DVD from the DVD drive (bottom slot).
Important: It may be necessary to close the radio screen for Disc 1 - Navigation to begin operation. If the
navigation software version in the navigation radio is the same or higher than v.1312, the software updating
will not start.
Insert Disc 1- Navigation software version 1312 into the DVD slot.
"Preparing to Load System Software" is displayed on the screen along with a progress bar. It will take
approximately 5 minutes for Disc 1 to load.
After Disc 1 - Navigation has completed the navigation system will automatically restart. Eject disc 1 from the
DVD slot. Insert Disc 2 - Audio software version 01.0F into the DVD slot.
1/2
Important: Approximately 10-15 seconds after inserting the disc, the screen will go blank. It will appear that
the radio has shut down and/or locked up. This is the mode the radio will go into when the software is
updating. If the audio software version in the navigation radio is the same as v01.0F, the software updating
will not start.
When Disc 2 is completed, the system will automatically restart. It will take approximately 5-10 minutes for
the system to restart. Remove Disc 2 - Audio from the DVD drive.
Turn the vehicle off. Open and close the driver's door and wait for 60 seconds.
Turn the vehicle on and reinstall the customer's navigation DVD.
Press the "NAV" button on the navigation radio, then press the "Agree" soft key on the screen.
After the map screen is displayed, touch the map screen the confirm that the map can be scrolled.
Using the Tech 2®, clear any/all DTCs from the radio.

Having said all that, I did the update myself and have a set of the discs. It's an easy process if you follow the instructions. (FWIW, I did not use a Tech 2.) If you'd like me to send you copies of the discs, send me a PM with mailing instructions and I'll be glad to help you.

Is there a way to tell if your radio has been updated already besides playing an MP3 audio CD? Will an Itunes burned CD help determine. I burned what I thought were MP3 music files to a CD and it did play in my Vette. I bought my 05 used less than a year ago and do have static on some FM stations here in Dallas. I also do not receive that many FM stations in the Vette here. Not sure if that's a Dallas thing or not. Downloaded the disks, just trying to determine if I need to update or not.

Edited..
Just looked at the properties of the mp3 files on the burned CD and they were converted to .CDA format which does play in the car. Since they are not MP3 on the CD, not sure if I'm comparing apples to apples and want to be sure before I update.

The best thing to do is to create a disc with MP3 files on it and see if it plays. From what you described, the disc you made is not a true test.

As for the FM static, what you're looking for is static that appears while listening to FM and disappears if you momentarily change to AM and then back to FM.

That's what I figured that it wasn't a disk with MP3 files but the MP3 files were converted to make an audio disk. I'll try to make an MP3 disk. I'll also try the FM to AM and see if the static goes away.

I have the discs. I suggest burning the discs using the link that Walt provided above. If you're not comfortable with that or if you're unable to burn them, send me a PM and I'll send you copies of the two discs.

Default Mp3 cd directory structure a problem

After installing the update (thanks to Mike) I was able to play an mp3 CD I created with over 90 songs. However when I created another mp3 CD with subdirectories to correspond with my playlists the nav unit says no valid disc loaded. I used iTunes 11 to convert the id3 tags to version 1.2 and then used Nero burning Rom 12 to create the subdirectories and copy the mp3 files. What am I doing wrong?

Hey Patrick! Back in a C6, nice!

What are the symptoms? Absolutely nothing happens? OR maybe it's a format problem?

Hey Rick!

It errors invalid disk. I think these are the same I used in my other 05 and 06. I have not used them since. My truck has USB.

I am not sure if the FM reception is any better.

The C6 requires MP3 discs that are a subset of the MP3 standard. i.e. just because an MP3 disc plays in one player doesn't mean it will play in a C6. The nav seems to be the most picky about what it wants. Make another MP3 disc.
• Media Monkey (free version) to create MP3 disc (NOT data or audio)
• 25 + ".mp3" file names. Get A.F.5 or let Media Monkey trim the names. I know, the manual says 32. It's wrong.
• 29 character folder names. Same as above issue.
• No VBR. Again, the manual says VBR works and VBR will work but you will not be able to correctly fast forward and back.
• ID3 version 1.x tags. Get ID3TagIt. Only version 1.0 and 1.1 tags will show on the display. iTunes and all modern programs want to create version 2.x tags which will not display on the nav.
If there are any issues left after using these 5 pointers, let us know.

Do what FortMorganAl suggests and your problem will likely be solved. I can tell you from first hand experience that he knows his stuff.

You are of course correct.

I used Media Monkey and burned a CD. It worked. I have to note, I saw no option for an MP3 specific disk. Only burn data cd/dvd/bd. No option to truncate file or folder names.

It worked anyway. Thank you very much!

I agree that Media Monkey is sort of like the nav - very capable but not as user friendly as it could be. I was going to do a tutorial but by the time I got around to it everyone was moving on to USB. http://www.mediamonkey.com/sw/webhelp/frame/index.html

Quickly copied from a post I made about 6 years ago and ASSUME is still correct:
To use Media Monkey
•Create a working directory with the files and folders just as you want them on the final CD.
•Start Media Monkey and, using the tree on the left, select "All" under the working directory.
•Press "Ctl A" to select (highlight) all files. Notice at the bottom you get a total number of files, size, and running time. Make sure the total size is 700 MB or less. If you are just a little long you can hold down ctl and deselect individual files.
•Press "Shift-Ctl-D" or click the burn icon.
•Select "Burn Data CD/DVD" and click Next (I know I say don’t make a data disc. Don’t worry. This will create an MP3 disc with the correct structure because Media Monkey is a multimedia program and not a data program so the author knows what to do.)
•Click Next again. It will use the files you have selected.
•In the Disc Format field enter "<folder:2><filename:25>" This will remove 2 root folders so C:\ERASE\WORKING\Storm Front on the computer becomes Storm Front on the CD. The 25 after the file name ensures you don't have any file names longer than 25 + "mp3"
•Uncheck the 4 checkboxes because the car doesn't care about playlists or artwork.
•Scroll through the file name display to make sure they are all yellow. Red indicates there is a problem with the file names. If you are in a hurry you can deselect individual files here also by unchecking the check box next to them.
•Insert a blank unformatted disc and click next.
•Ensure the correct drive is selected. You should see a green bar next to the buttons. Click Burn.

Having said all that, I did the update myself and have a set of the discs. It's an easy process if you follow the instructions. (FWIW, I did not use a Tech 2.) If you'd like me to send you copies of the discs, send me a PM with mailing instructions and I'll be glad to help you. [/QUOTE]

Hi Robert - I downloaded the data from Walt's link. Worked like a champ. After you download the files, unzip them. They are ISO file that have to be burned to a CD-R. If you can't do that, PM me and I will send you the disks that I created. Passing on the good will of the Corvette Brotherhood.
