I get the white chalky stuff too. Anyone know what that is?
Subject :White Chalky Residue on Interior Trim Panels or IP Dash Pad
Models:2004-2009 Cadillac XLR models 2005-2009 Chevrolet Corvette models
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
Some customers may comment of a chalky substance that is present on the interior trim panels. This is more commonly noticed on dark colored trim versus lighter colored trim. The release of this chalky substance is referred to as "Out Gassing" and can occur with plastic and vinyl materials.
Recommendation/Instructions:
DO NOT replace the trim panels to correct this concern. Clean the interior trim panels using Murphy's Oil Soap or an equivalent, non-acidic, cleaner. Replacing the trim panels does not guarantee this will not happen again.
Note: Murphy's Oil Soap can be purchased at most grocery stores. Follow the directions on the bottle for use.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
Here are some pics of SEVERE outgassing of the vinyl on a late model Dodge Challenger dash...
I'd like to find something that cleans it up a bit without giving that wet, shiny look.
303 Aerospace Protectant works good and has UV protection.
Can also be used on the seats, rubber weather stripping and tires.
It does give it a very slight shine but definitely not a wet look.
More of a nice natural look and not dull
I bought some Turtle Wax Ice Interior Cleaner based on what others were using and it works very well. It is not not greasy and cleans up the door panels nicely.
My wife lathers up in sun screen due to skin & we have a vert, it turns the interior white. If tried dozens of cleaners with no luck. Best I found was a drop of soap and a damp rag. Sometimes the simplest things are best.
Usually, the damp rag alone will remove even sunscreen from our black door panels. Occasionally, a bit of soap like you mentioned. We've done it that way on our 2001, then 2006, now 2009.
Interesting that GM mentioned the Murphy's Oil Soap, I wonder if some cars have the problem more than others. Besides that Dodge...
What do you guys use on the interior trim around the consols? The carbon fiber type one on the 2008+ vettes
Its fingerprint heaven!
I use the damp rag on that area also. Removes the fingerprints and dust, but they come right back. Haven't heard of anything that will actually "repel" them. I kinda liked the silver trim in our 2006 better, in that area.
meguiar's interior detalailer (CLEANER) looks like it did new .303 and all that other crap i threw in the garbage after one use ,to much shine.
this is the ''only thing'' that looks factory,,,,good luck
