by mileage? Or by time? For instance: I bought an Impala SS in late 2009. I only put 2,000 miles on it the first year and a half and last Spring I took it in for an oil change....... It doesn't look like I'll be driving my 2005 Vette all that much more either, so I'll probably be going a long time between changes. But there won't be that much mileage on the car between changes. So, how would you do it if you were me? If I only put a couple thousand miles a year on it, should I change it once a year? Every ??? miles? How do you guys (who only put a few thousand miles a year) do your oil changes? I have only put about 5,000 miles on my 78 Vette since 1991.

What does the manual say? Doesn't the manual say to go by the DIC -OR- 12 months whichever comes first?
When the system has calculated that oil life has been diminished, it will indicate that an oil change is necessary. A CHANGE ENGINE OIL message will come on. Change your oil as soon as possible within the next 600 miles (1 000 km). It is possible that, if you are driving under the best conditions, the oil life system may not indicate that an oil change is necessary for over a year. However, your engine oil and filter must be changed at least once a year and at this time the system must be reset.
Yep, that's what the manual says. You know, if GM would put one of these manuals in every car they sell a lot of these questions could be solved without requiring people to pay for an Internet connection.
Please explain to me why you would need to change oil once a year if you only put 1 to 2 thousand miles on it in a year. I know what the manual says but I would be curious to know what a Blackstone Labs analysis would show with so few miles in a year.
I am at the dealer getting oil change, brakes checked, etc. I use Mobile 1. I prefer the dealer because they check for any recalls or bulletins too.
Unlike many on this forum this dealer is good, never any issues. Oil gets changed with about 40 percent remain.
Just changed my oil on Monday. DIC had me down to 10% oil life left. Got to that point in roughly 6000 miles. I'll change it again when it gets down to 10%. So far, so good.
