Below is a picture of my passenger side visor bracket, which the visor snaps into. There's a red light that I only noticed earlier this week. I have no idea what it is, but it lights up when the door is open. It may be similar to the yellow light on the mirror of C5s, which I also had no idea what it was when I owned a C5. But then it took me 10 years to learn where the wheel lock key was on the C5 and by then, I threw out the wheel locks . Does anyone know what the red light on the C6 visor bracket is for?
It's actually amber. It's called a wash light. It is an ambient light for the shift area to keep it slightly illuminated during night time driving. It works in conjunction with the daylight sensor and the headlights.
It was removed from 2008 C6's in February 2008 during the model year run as a mid year change.

Reason: Edited to correct year.
The C5 light was amber, but it's definitely red on my 2008 (2007 build date). I looked at a 2012 Corvette convertible yesterday and it was not there. Wouldn't February 2007 be too early to be building a 2008?

I'm sorry, yes, typing too quickly. February 2008 of the 2008 model year. If it is a factory light, it's amber. If your's is red, someone swapped it out for a red one. If it is in a car built after February 18th 2008 and it has the light, someone put it in after the fact as it didn't come from the factory with it after that date however the clip for the visor still had the hole and the wiring harness for the light was still up overhead for the rest of the model year.
Talon 90 thanks for the information, but I hope GM didn't pay too much to include it on my 2008, because I just noticed it. It couldn't be too important, because GM took it off later models

I'm not sure I understand your point. Every Corvette from the first 2005 to the last car on line in the middle of Feburary when it was eliminated had the light. Safe bet they didn't go out of their way to install it in your car.
Believe it or not, you'll notice it in a car that doesn't have it after you've driven one that does. It's a very subtle difference that unless you are looking for, most wouldn't notice and hence, the reason they removed. They spent more time and money answer questions about what the little light was above the visor. Once they realized that most didn't know what it was or that it was even there, they figured they wouldn't miss it.
Like anything else, the benefit of the feature is weighed against the cost. It cost more to buy the light, mold the part to hold the light and have the wiring for the light. In addition the labor to install the light in to the visor clip.
Frankly, I like the light and notice it when I drive a car that doesn't have it. Unfortunately, no one asked me when they were talking about removing it.
My VW's and audi's have the same light but they actually shine down brightly to light up the shift area. I actually removed a bulb from my audi and went to radioshack and bought a replacement for the Vette. Much brighter and better now. You can also get different colors

GM may have removed it from the Corvette but It's still on my new Sierra Denali HD and my wifes 2012 Acadia Denali. Both vehicles are in the $55-65K price range so I'm not sure why it was removed from the Vette.
I actually swapped out the amber light in my 2005 C6 for a blue light. I actually liked that light.
When I got my 08 Z06, I noticed the light was gone. Us Z06 people claim the light was removed to save weight.
I do remember the light in my C5...but, I've never noticed it on my C6. Maybe because mines an A6 ?
Mike,
Go out to your garage and check, or if you prefer, I check later this month when I'm down there. I don't think A6 makes a difference. I see you made 10 years on CF.
Bob
My '06 A6 has one, in fact I swapped the stocker out for a brighter red one. I purchased several, simply because they are cheap, red and also super white, have not tried the super white yet. Got them from superbrightleds.com Super White LED #RL5-W8045 Red #RL5-R8030 Hope this helps.
Hmmm..."This light stays on while driving to keep the
cabin from being too dark".
I don't care if it's dark and scary,
long as I got my dashboard Mary...

Might make a difference if you're driving a manual tranny C6.

And that I do...'05 six speeder vert...and trust me, I can find the gears without the light.
Honestly, I noticed the light when I first got the car...not even sure it works now without going to check.
