Default Wth????

So the Vette ('07) is in the shop for a full repaint... Upon removing the rear quarter panels, just in front of the rear wheel guess what is found... A sand bag or more like a Hefty bag tied in a knot.
Body shop says he's seen it before and its GM's response to reduce road noise.
Really??? A tied off garbage bag with filler sitting loosely in a cavity???

Anyone seen this before?

Would a molded plastic container filled with a ground up plastic compound be better? If it works don't knock it.

I guess my post just goes in line with the build quality and shortcuts GM takes on their flagship model.

I love (love!) my vette but c'mon, a garbage bag? Fill the cavity with compressed foam, padded insulation or something of the sort. I may look into that just to reduce the weight, even if minimally.

Just had my rear quarters off and I think it is a great idea. Light weight, easy to mold around the brake ducts, cheap to make, and probably does a half decent job.

That is some guy's special job at the factory. I saw (and wondered) what he was doing.. Then I saw it repeated every time.

Purely a guess it was for additional soundproofing - chezzzzzy looking IMO, but hey, if it works.... no harm no foul.

This is retarded if true, and indicative of american car quality.

What an asinine statement.

All manufacturers use it. It works, so why not?

It's cheap, light weight, and hidden from view. So what's the harm?

I posted a thread about it (with pics ) about three weeks ago.

Blew me away, it seemed to serve two purposes on my ZR1, sound deadening and when I removed it, the rear brake scoop started to rattle like hell. I got to admit, I really was surprised by it.

Well then I guess it's reason for you to trade your Vette in for an import.

By the looks of the C7 so far... I dont buy American for sake of it. They actually have to produce the better product. K?

Another, perhaps more elegant solution would be 1) more expensive to apply and manufacture, 2) more expensive to replace in case of an accident or repair to ANY system running through that space or requiring access through that space, and 3) probably no more effective in its designed purpose. So -- while it may not be elegant, it makes sense and helps keep cost of ownership down, which is a defining characteristic of a Corvette vis-a-vie other sports cars of similar performance capability.

Foam in the bag, not sand! Typical soundproofing that all the OEM's use.

I dont know, maybe its just the appearance of it and having my car on a pedestal Stuffing it with insulation, like in the attic, wouldve been more appealing. Maybe its all perception and as some have said "if it works dont knock it" but id like to think my $50k got me more than hand tied garbage bag stuffed into a crevice. And come to think of it, how much have we ALL complained about road noise and/or added insulation... hmmmm.

is over, I still love my Vette!

If you do, then you will have to deal with imported garbage bags. They are probably smaller and probably break in less than 50,000 miles.

I guess a piece of dynamat and a better bracket for my brake duct couldn't of been used?
