Default Here we go again...

Just read through the April Motor Trend issue comparo of the Corvette Grand Sport coupe and the new Porsche 911, as usual, the negative comes out. First, the GS was pretty optioned out with a $72k+ sticker, while the BASE price of the 911 was at $97k+ and the as-tested price was just over $140k, so let's compare an 8 year old design with a brand new one costing twice as much, Of course there was all the complaint about the interior quality, steering feel, brake feel, seat comfort, etc, and the terrible wet weather traction of the Vette. As an owner of both 911's and Vettes, and current GS owner, I'll buy the fact that the Porsche interior and steering feel is better, but not that much, and the braking is pretty even, regardless of feel. Correct me if I'm wrong though, but for nearly DOUBLE the cost, shouldn't the Porsche's interior quality be better? Shouldn't the steering feel be a bit more refined? Brake feel too? And wet traction, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the 911's engine right over the rear wheels, which certainly helps? I haven't driven the new 911 yet, and from what I hear from a good friend that sells them, it's a big improvement from the previous 911, so I'm sure it's a great car. The 911 used also was equipped with the optional 7 speed PDK transmission, while the Vette was a manual, so here we go again comparing unlike vehicles. The GS compared well in performance, at half the cost, while I'm sure a ZO6 or ZR1 would demolish the 911, still at far less cost, but we'd still get the complaints I'm sure, haters gonna hate. Bottom line, let's compare apples to apples, the guy that wants a 911 will buy the 911 regardless, as will the guy that wants the Corvette, so unless we're comparing performance numbers only, what's the point, since they're in different price leagues altogether? For me, the GS is a great car, better everyday driver and weekend warrior at far less cost, I can live with a little plastic inside.

At the base 911's price, I think a better comparison is the Z06.

And at $140k, compare with a ZR1.

Of course, we wouldn't want to embarrass the 911.

I've never been a Porshe fan. Cool cars, but I always wanted a Corvette. That's what I bought.
I would bet most Porshe buyers always wanted one if those.

As far as the journalists go, they have always been saying the same things, and are afraid of looking like hypocrites, if they change their tune.

That's not to say that the Corvette couldn't use a better interior...
But I agree. Who really cares. It's plenty comfortable for the money.

im sorry but something is wrong with that test. there is no way a porsche 911 is even close to a grandsport in real world driving comparisions.

the ls3 engine in every situation be it from a start or a roll will obliterate the 911.

i have raced many in mexico in stock vs stock form before i had any modification done to my car. and once i shifted into third gear in the vette it was bye bye for the 911.

i love porsche fan boys that like to rev there 3.6 liters at the light... usually when they hear the sound my heads and cammed ls3 makes back at them there face turns red and they back off.. man i love my 6.2

Not in this case. The 911 does 0-60 in 3.7 seconds, on the way to a 12.0 second quarter at 117.1 MPH. The Grand Sport does 0-60 in 4.1 seconds, and loses another tenth in the quarter at 12.5 @115.0 MPH.

Shows the value of the PDK transmission, as the Porsche is down 36 horsepower and down way more torque, and only weighs 120 pounds less.

please dont quote magazine tests and paper results... like i said i have REAL world experience and alot of it.

in a light to light race of 500 feet or less then it will be somewhat close only if the c6 driver spins the tires alittle to much. the porsches's womenly torque wont let it burn those unessary large tires it has which gives it a better launch against the average c6 driver. Now have a race from a 40 roll and that porsche starts to fade away very quickly

IMHO....there is NO comparison. NOTHING like AMERICAN muscle. I might be in the minority but I never got the "foreign car" thing. I have driven em all....The Ferrari's...Porshe's... and some I can't even pronounce......and I still say....NOTHING like American Muscle.

This is beaten to death each time a new magazine article comes out comparing the 911 to the GS Vette.
99.9% of the forum members find reason to defend the Vette and reasons why
it is better than the 911. Unfortunately the magazine editors disagree and probably 99.9% of the 911 owners agree with the magazine editors.
If you like what you have enjoy it, no way are you going to convince Motor Trend, Car and Driver or any other magazines the GS is better than the new 911.

If I was the OP I wouldn't worry about what the magazines say.

Read the article 2 points I must make!
1- The porshe is a CARRERA 911 "S" not even a regular 911!
2- If you are going to compare a $140,000 porshe at least be fair and use a $120,000 vette which would be a ZR1 apples to apples!!!!!

Every time a comparison appears in one of the magazines, everyone gets wound up. Who cares what they say. I have a Vette and I enjoy every minute I'm driving it. That's all that matters.

On thing the mags never touch on is - the cost of repairs on a 911. Some complain of Corvette Tax but speaking from experience, there is also a Porshe Tax which includes turning over your first born!

The Porsche vs Corvette head-to-head is an unavoidable comparison, but MT's approach of what, where, when, and how they tested and compared the cars, showed a purposeful decision to emphasize the Porsche's strengths and the Corvette's weaknesses.

The outcome was no surprise. But for me, and I suspect the vast majority of the US population (and most likely the rest of the world), the Porsche could be a million times better than the Corvette and that fact, whether objective or subjective, would still be irrelevant because the price of the car makes it unattainable.

When I took delivery of my 06 , there in the chevy showroom , was a new 911. The previous owner had traded it in , at a great loss, after only a few weeks of ownership. The provocation ? He had driven a friends new Z06 and promptly made the trade.

Watch the Corvette commercial on you tube video....Believe it's called "just to be fair" That will sum up my stance. My 2012 GS Callaway Centennial Convert is new and still undriven. A bunch of mods getting done and maiden voyage in a couple weeks. When I finally do get to drive it, I'll be waving to a ton of you guys. There's a Porsche,Audi, lambo, and Ferrari dealer all within a mile or two from my house. I encounter these cars on a daily basis. In fact, there's also a Porsche race prep facility also right down the street. I encountered an R 8 at gas station about 6 weeks ago and made small talk as I appreciate all super-cars. I wasn't in the Vette as it hadn't been delivered. He jokingly threw out...Wanna Race. My reply was give me about 6 weeks and explained what I had enroute. He withdrew his request. (His was the 8 cylinder BTW) I don't do stupid *hit in my car but my point is that they all know where they stand and that would be right behind a corvette. I'll wave if your in a vette but as far as anything else goes.........Just salute me and be on your merry way.
