Default fast question about painting calipers with a brush

tomorrow i plan on painting my calipers red with the brush method. to get the CORVETTE raised lettering back to shinny again do you guys lightly sand the paint off? and if yes what grit do you usually use. if no sanding what other method is there. thanks.

You can do it one of two ways, neither of which involves sanding the letters. You can coat the raised lettering with a thin coat of Vaseline before painting the calipers. Then carefully wipe off the protective Vaseline coating afterwords. The second way is to dampen a rag with thinner and while the paint is still wet, wipe the paint off of the raised letters with the dampen rag.

I used a lightly dampened rag with asitone.

Paint the calipers with a 1" foam brush. After they are completely dry and cured (24hours) scrape the paint off the letters carefully with a razorblade. Worked very well for me.

That's exactly what I did. Did my best not to get paint on it, (did anway) sanded afterwards with about 400 grit on a wood block, then put a light coat of clear coat (Walmart rattle can) over it afterwards to keep it from rusting. Looks great a year later.

Just use a razor blade across the surface of the letters while the paint is stll soft. It comes right off in seconds.

i have the duplicolor red in the can from when i used to paint my miata calipers. i find it to be very consistent and a little on the thick side which i happen to like. i also have the spray can but it is a pinch darker in shade compared to the can. plus for whatever reason the duplicolor in the can seems to "pop" in color better than the spray.

I just put my wheels back on about an hour ago after painting mine. I used chapstick on the lettering. Agreed that the best bet is to remove with a razor while the paint is still soft. I chose to spray them and am pretty happy with the results. The whole process took a lot longer than I thought it would..what with all the prepwork of covering and taping everything, then waiting 48 hrs to recoat etc. I'm alittle embarrassed to say that I've been working on it for 4 days and only have the fronts done!

BTW yes(the can and spray) are both duplicolor caliper paint and i have two very soft fine expensive 1 inch brushes to use to get it as smooth as possible.

I just finished doing mine. I used duplicolor caliper spray paint. Black and then clear over. I used vasoline on the letters and the paint came off easily. Sprayed the clear over the black and the letters after they were cleaned. The whole thing came out better than I could have hoped.

They are actually more shiny than the lousy cellphone pic shows.
