So...a friend of my bought a 2008 vette with 15k miles. But from the looks of the car, inside and out, and the engine - it looks like it has been driven for at least 60k...
Any way we can check to make sure someone didnt swap out the speedometer gauge or altered the miles somehow?
One place to start is get the GM VIS report on the car's service history, at least what GM knows about. He can email the VIN to one of these vendors and they will return a copy of the report.

I will forward this to my friend and have him contact you...just out of curiosity, what if the person did repairs himself or took it to a moms and pops shop?
If service was not done at a Chevy dealer, then they can only get you the warranty start date, miles, where it was sold and stuff like that.Plus any recalls, etc.

Don't contact me.......I can't get any information. Have him email the VIN to one of those 3 vendors I posted.
What he will want to look for on the VIS report is if GM did some kind of work on it, say 2 years ago, and it shows with 18k miles at that time, then he'll know something is wrong. That's all, it may provide a clue, nothing more. Good luck.
Its his NOW..he should checked it out before purchase...Tell your "friend" to enjoy his new vette...just might be that the previous owner was a driver and not a waxer...
Actually, the odometer mileage is stored in the IPC and replacing it would be simple therefore the mileage change goes with it. Now, to insure I'm not talking BS here, I do not know if the C-6 IPC has the VIN stored in it as well. The C-5 IPC does not. Let me add that my '07 with its current 108K miles, the engine bay is not totally clean and wiped down. Its a bit on the unclean side but its certainly not dirty either. Depending on where the car came from and what weather conditions it was driven in would make a difference about the cleanliness. As suggested already, go to any GM dealer and have them pull a report on it.

I agree he should have tried to check before he bought, but is it his if the mileage was altered somehow, wouldn't that be a misrepresentation of a fact or fraud, really is there no recourse?
Unless he bought it from a dealer, there is not really much he can do. Keep in mind the standards that some forum members apply here also. For some, a fine layer of dust can signal that the car is "trashed"...LOL.

If the car was simply driven and not cleaned and detailed it will easily look like crap. Vettes seem to be so rarely treated like a usual car that when you see one that does look like "normal" it seems it was abused in every way.

I remember this question coming up before and if i remember correctly the answer was that you could swap in a lower mileage cluster for your own and there was no way to know.
Not that that is what happened.. just that it could be done.
I hope he got a good deal if it is a trashed as you make it sound. There are a lot of nice garage queens out there.
