Default Clunky Auto When Cold

The auto transmission on my 2010 GS does a really hard audible downshift in the morning at the first two stop signs. After warm up, it is fine for the rest of the day. The dealer tells me this is "normal". Thing is, I would never buy a car knowing it did this, as it seems strange.

My 2011 does not do this after sitting for hours in the cold as low as 20 degrees F. The shifts are definitely less smooth but there is no noise and wouldn't be considered "hard" by any standard. It does smooth out after a couple of miles of warming up, like yours does.

My 06 A6 does the opposite. Its slush when cold, then on warm up perfect shifts.

Harder shifts are normal for a cold trans, but within reason, it shouldn't feel like it's clunking hard or slamming into gears...
