Was changing my clutch fluid today and had the hood open. The wind was blowing and the hood was on its way down. im assuming the struts needs replacing. I was wondering if the stock ones are the best replacement, or an aftermarket version. Some recomendations would be appreciated
I just replaced the struts for the rear hatch i got them from Advance Auto parts there 'Strong Arm' brand made in USA too.
With a discount i got them for $52 /pair.
I've always wondered if these fail on C5/C6s. They don't seem to hold much weight when the hood is in full up position and fairly balanced.
My 1997 C5 has the original ones on it. And they still work. I've had to replace them on just about every other hood or liftgate I own. Then again, the rear hatch ones on the 97 are still working too...I know they hold weight...
It is rare for both to need replacement...figure which one is bad and start by just replacing that one. They do not wear like tires, they go until a failure happens...if you replace the bad one, the other could end up being fine until years after you sell the car.
New strut...plain with no attachments, no metal band clip
Strut that's on trunk...
Top has plug with wire that clips on to metal band around strut just under where it snaps on to trunk lid.. Band doesn't appear to have a split in it, don't know how to get it off and how to attach it to new strut...
Bottom: also had plug that snaps onto metal band arounbd bottom of strut. Also, has a rubber cover. Have no idea how to get it off old strut and on the the new strut...
