As you know, when you press the start button there is a soft relay-type of sound followed by the engine starting and the dash going through the startup process (needles going to max and back, lights in the dash on, etc.).
Recently I have had occassions where I hear the soft sound but there is no start on the first press but everything is fine on the second press. When I was on the trip to Dallas last Friday I stopped at a rest station and when I got into the car I pressed start three times and nothing happend. On the fourth try it worked as normal. Again, usually it starts on the second try.
This has happened to me several times as well. In my case, I stop pushing the button and just wait. After 5 to 10 seconds the dash lights come on, the needles do their sweep, and then I can start the car. I posted a Q about this here a while back and everyone said "it's the fob". Well obviously it's not. For your symptoms, depending on how old your car is, it may be the fob battery.
Glad to hear that someone else has a similar issue. I have no hopes of getting it repaired until I can figure out the cause or it happens all the time.
My car is a 2012 coupe with about 4000 miles on it, built in 11/11.
Best of luck to you.

This may be an issue with the immobilizer circuit. There is a reference to it in the owners manual, and it simply says that if the car doesn't start when you press on the button to try it again.
"When you try to start the vehicle, if the engine does not start and the security light comes on, there may be a problem with your immobilizer system. Press the START button again."

Any ideas?
TIA
Had this happen once on my 09 Z06 when it was about two years old. Waiting to go out on the track at Talledega, and the car wouldn't start. On the fourth try, it started, but a bunch of drivers lined up behind me weren't to happy for me holding everyone up.
It hasn't happen again since that one time(two years have gone by).
went to take my 2009 car out of winter storage, hooked up the fully charged battery, pressed the magic button 20 or so times and just heard the little wind up noise but no starter. Tried the pocket in the glove box, nothing. Finally one last push and it started. Has not happened since.
Along that same path, do have any issues opening the doors...i e. door pads. I had your exact issues with the start button & then the door pads. Replaced FOB battery & all issues cleared up.
I've had this happen about 3 times over the last 30 months. When it did happen, and I'm not sure this was the problem, I took the fob out of my pocket and held it close to the dash. Car started as it should. Could have been a fluke, but that's my story.
The only time I've had this problem is when I find the clutch isn't fully depressed. It can be only a half inch off the floor and the start button won't engage.
First couple of times made me wonder if it was going to start. Now when It happens I keep pressing the start button, (or now I don't let it go until I hear the start begin) and that seems to work for me.
I don't know if it is a combination of things. Try holding the button down until it does start.
