my brother used to have a c5 and he said that bc the head unit was like the brain of the system, you couldnt take it out of the car to install an aftermarket head unit. he said you would have to relocate it and hard wire it that way everything still worked.
my question is, is this true for the 6? i havent read or heard that anywhere before. id assume the wireharness would take care of it?
Not a problem. I swapped mine out. You have to get a special adapter to keep the steering wheel controls (even if you don't have steering wheel controls) and I think there was another to enable audible alarms that come through the speakers even when the ignition & radio are turned off. The radio vendor should be able to identify everything you need.
Aftermarket radios can cause an issue when you try to get into the FOB programming mode. The radio triggers a code that the radio security feature is not talking to the ECM properly. If you have an aftermarket radio and did not buy the harness for the door beeps and OnStar, you might NOT be able to get into programming mode.
Get on the C6 Audio/Electronics Forum and find C5BearsFan.
He can supply you with all the proper adapters to maintain all the OEM functions and is also a Dealer offering some of the best prices on audio components, anywhere.
And your brother, as repeated above, is absolutely wrong on all accounts.
