Default Vanity Mirror hinges are the devil !

im convinced that the vanity mirror hinges are the devil ! I have now both the driver and the passenger side visor mirror hinges broken. I was quoted some retared amount of money by the dealership to have them replaced. Appartnly according to a good buddy that works at GM this is extermly common but still falls under normal wear and tear.. Does anyone have a prefered place to order these that wont break the bank used or new makes no differnce to me. To be honest i dont ever use them but the fiance is beyond adimit about checking her make up every 10 minutes or so Thank guys/ gals. As always have a great day.

It's been reported by several members over the years. It happened to me as well, but I had mine replaced under warranty.

I suppose next time it happens to me (warranty has expired) I'll check prices at gmpartshouse.com or partstaxi.com.

By the way, as a preventative, some have suggested to put a drop of lubricant (annually) on the visor hinges.

What lubricant? Some petroleum based products may react with the plastic.

We've been using a tiny dab of dielectric silicone grease (the stuff GM also recommends for your weatherstrip) on each hinge, both opened and closed. Then put just a little of the grease on a Q-tip and rub it where the lid rubs against the frame as it opens and closes.

So far, so good...

BTW, some owners have given up on the hinges and use sticky-back Velcro to hold the cover in place. I haven't seen any pics or long term reports on how that works.

I believe Dielectric Silicone Grease is compatible with plastic.

Default Replaced mine from Parts Taxi

I just replaced my visors from Parts taxi and they broke again in 2 weeks. I don't know what to do to make them last. Is there an aftermarket someone has thought of here.

Default Parts Taxi

Well I just posted that I purchased some from Parts Taxi and they broke but when I emailed them they are replacing them so my experience with them has been good but the vanity visors still suck.

It would be easy to say that with lube as mentioned above, and a little gentleness when opening/closing; the covers shouldn't break. We went 3 yrs/44k miles on our 2006, and 3 yrs/47k miles so far on our 2009. We don't use the mirrors a lot, but certainly do so whenever we wish. No problems so far.

But I suspect the answer is not that simple, so when someone figures out what's going on, please post!
