In the 2012 model year of the base C6, if it already has the built in navigation system, is there any added benefit of adding the PAL system to operate an iPod?

Absolutely no need to install a PAL in 2012 with navigation and the added USB. The USB port in the center console will provide you with everything you need to play your iPod with the factory radio. It provides all the functionality that the PAL does and more. Just plug your iPod cable in to the port and access and playback your music via the navigation touchscreen. In addition to what the PAL offers older cars with NAv, the included USB port will allow the radion to interface with thumb drives or portable hard drives that contain music files. It is simply plug and play with nothing other than the cable that came with your iPod.
Does the new set up in the 2012 C6 also charge the IPod while in use with the stereo?
Yes if it is a current generation iPhone or iPod touch that uses USB vs. the older iPods that used FireWire. In the event of an older generation unit, you would need an adapter from a third party.
One thing to consider that's being discussed in another thread. Some people like to install a backup camera (or even a front mount camera). To do this, you need to install a Corvette 360 LockPick device (http://www.coastaletech.com/corvettelockpicks.htm).
The current 360 LockPick also includes the PAL functionality as Chevrolet was slow to offer this in previous models. Apparently the two PALs don't play well together (pun intended). Coastal tech support has confirmed that their current LockPick (360-2) is NOT compatible with the 2012 Corvette and is being redesigned. They hope to have a new version out this summer.
This is obviously not a knock against Chevrolet as it's not their responsibility to worry about the compatibility of 3rd party devices. I give them credit for offering the iPod support. Although I wish they would have added support for aux video while they were at it!
