Are you asking if the car will always go to redline to shift when in S? The answer to that is no, unless you have used the paddles. In other words, if you put it in S, don't use the paddles at all, and are driving on the street, it will shift at reasonable RPM but the shifts will be a bit firmer and perhaps it will hold lower gears a bit longer. To be honest, I don't notice much of a difference. Of course if you are at wide open throttle, it will go to redline.

If you are using the paddles I assume it will shift itself at redline regardless of whether you hit + or not.

The first part is correct:
without paddles activated at full throttle it will shift at the Redline.

But with the paddles activated ..... NO, it will NOT shift on it's own at redline

You have to hit + or it will hit the Rev limiter

And with paddles activated, depending on how good the driver is at it, you have to hit + early ..
like at 5500 to 6000 RPM .. or it will still hit the Rev limiter

From the 2010 owners manual about "S" mode:

"S (Sport Mode) : When in S (Sport Mode), the
transmission will work as an automatic until you use
the Manual Paddle Shift Controls, which activates driver
manual gear selection. See Manual Paddle Shift later in
this section. While in S (Sport Mode), the transmission
will have more noticeable upshifts for sportier vehicle
performance."

NOOOOOO, it will NOT shift at redline if you use the paddles in S. You will activate the Rev Limiter.

Default 2nd gear?

So another technical question....

I noticed when I shifted into S mode at a stoplight, it went into 2nd gear. Does S mode launch in second gear? My 60 ft times are weak but my 1/4 ET and mph are where they should be, so I got excited thinking I'd try paddle shifting at track so I can start out in 1st and shave some time. Thoughts?

When you shift into S mode it's always in 1st gear when you start from a stop and it'll automatically upshift and downshift as long as you never touch the paddles. There is no indicator to tell you what gear you are in, unless you activate the paddles. Once you activate the paddles, they stay that way until you deactivate them. The trans will automatically downshift as far as 2nd gear in paddle mode, but will never upshift without using the paddles.

All this info is in the OM too.

Just put it in sport mode and do not touch the paddles at all. You will be in 1st gear coming out of the gate

Only when u use the paddles will it be a manual up shift and when slowing the trans will downshift all the way down to second by itself , to get it in first you will have to downshift it manually . This is only when u use the paddles

When you put it in sport mode from drive , it should not say anything .... the only way the gear selector display pops up is if you touch the paddles

Your DIC should blank .......

Do not touch the paddles , just move the lever from drive to sport .
If you are getting a display that says you are in 2nd gear then I would get it checked out

To launch in 1st gear in S mode (which you want to do at the track), shift into S, press the downshift paddle to get into 1st gear, move the gear selector into D, now move back to S. The car will now launch in 1st gear. S always starts in second gear. You can program this out with a tune if you want.
