We had a 2006 Z51 A6, sold it after an accident and bought a 2009 Z51 A6.
Besides the better powertrain warranty; the 2009 steering is lighter and more precise, engine has noticably more power, A6 revmatches on downshifts, Bluetooth, etc.
In my opinion, the improvements from the 2006 to the 2009 are almost as much as from our previous 2001 to the 2006.

I agree with the sentiment expressed herein about the desirability of the 08 and newer models. I would try to purchase an 08 or newer if I could precisely because of the significant improvements.
In the $30 to $35k price range the OP mentioned, I would think you could get an 08, fairly well optioned, with under 30k miles. If you find one that meets all your requirements and they want $39 or $40, offer $34 - often a motivated seller would rather eat the $5 thousand than loose the sale.
Best of Luck !!
