Default Check engine light

How do you get the codes from a 2005 c6 automatic, engine just started to shake a little and now I have a check engine light, thought I would check here before going to the stealerships.

Thanks

You don't need to go to the dealer for this, as most auto parts stores(like Autozone or Advance) will do a scan for you. In your case, sounds like a misfire, maybe a plug, coil pack or wire. If over your head technically, a good independent repair shop should be able to help you out.

But is there a way to get the engine codes? So I can check them myself?

Thanks

Used to be able to bring codes up on C5 Vette dash displays, but on C6's, you'll need to plug a scan tool in the under dash OBDII diagnostic port. As mentioned, best starting out at the auto parts store for a free scan. At todays repair labor prices, good buying a scan tool, especially with your car being 7 years old now. I've had scan tools for years and well worth it, but also pretty good with a wrench. Example. Had a car throwing O2 sensor pre-heater codes. Got two new O2 sensors and special socket online for less than $150 bucks. You wouldn't believe what a repair shop or dealer would have charged for this. Keep in mind V6 & V8 cars have four O2 sensors. Two before the cat converters, and two after.
