I use two types of protection on the way home from an R8C delivery:
1. V1 radar detector
2. SA 45 Auto

I did get a small rock chip on the front of a 2011 SSB GS on the way home from Stasek Chevy last July. I had stopped in Bowling Green for Corvette Homecoming, won Best of Show in my drive and shine class, and then got a stone chip after leaving BG. The trip was 1000 miles home from Chicago to south Alabama, and Bowling Green was about halfway home.
I'll be taking Museum delivery soon on a 2013 60th 427 Vert. I'm sure I'll have the same two types of protection.

In the C5 section there are a lot of people that use plastidip spray.

You can get a clear and do yours, then when you get home simply peel it off.

I have not tried this, but it sounds like a good solution for trips.

What are you getting? I'm flying to the east cost and driving back my 07 Z tomorrow 860 miles! I'm bringing a bunch of blue 3m painters tape. Not sure if I'm going to use it or not. I live in Racine, WI

Hey Neighbor, I'm looking to order a GS early to mid June, but won't take delivery until sometime in August due to the plant shutting down for the month of July. I'm still trying to work out the logistics. August is a busy time for Navy Bootcamp, so I may not be able to break away. I'll know more the first of June...safe travels and see you around the area, Brian

So what are you going to do with the car after you get it home? Is it going directly into a museum or will you be driving it occasionally? If you ever expect to drive it then what is the difference between driving it the few hundred miles from the museum home and the next few hundred miles after you get home?

I'm having it stored in a hermetically sealed bunker so after the world ends, I'll be the only person in the world with a Corvette

J/K, I get the point, but being my first Corvette I just want to be careful and keep it new and pristine as long as possible. I do plan to drive the he!! out of it though, but I know my neck of the woods and what roads/areas to avoid. I don't know the roads/conditions on the road back from Bowling Green...Thanks for the feedback

IMO your biggest threat for damage is shredded truck tires laying on the road. The one piece of advise I can give you is don't drive in the dark. I left too early one morning when it was still dark and raining and couldn't see the shredded truck tires on the highway and hit one, luckily no damage.

My '05 has about 22k miles on it and has very few chips. No protection at all. The truth is that nothing will fully protect it from the evil world it will face short of not driving it.

All this talk about driving defensively is fine when you are on some back road but driving on any interstate or freeway is just taking yer chances. I had a rock chip my Vette's windshield and the closest vehicle was a semi that was 3 lanes over about 75 yards ahead of me. You just never know.

Good luck!

My 06 has about the same miles and paint still has no chips, however, I am getting ready to drive mine from DFW to Southern California, covering a about a 4.5K mile trip by the time I get home. I am a bit concerned about some of the back roads I will be taking (staying off interstates as much as possible) and have inquired on another page about getting the clear protection before leaving. I can order the kit for bumper and partial hood for about 120 bucks, but would need to get someone to install it...would not want to try it myself.

I have been impressed with the stuff. I work at TMS for Texas Driving Experience and our "track only" fleet of C5 Z0 6's received this treatment 6 years ago. The material does have a few divits from all the track miles, but I can just about guarantee once the protection is pulled off, the paint underneath will still be in good condition. Wish I could say the same about the stripes and decals on those cars....

If it is going to happen, it is going to happen. My bought my new Vert two months ago and and just hit 1,000 miles. I used Zaino on my car like everyone suggests, but don't have a clear bra, because I ordered a Speed Lingerie bra two weeks ago and I am waiting for its arrival. Yesterday, I made a two mile round trip to the grocery store on a well paved road and came home and found a small chip about the size of a pin head on the leading edge of my hood, just above my bumper. I know it wasn't there before, because I had just finished detailing my car before I left. Just goes to show you that you will never know when it will happen to you.
