This is my take on this...
Who actually takes advantage of the full performance offered by a ZR1? These cars are just for people to say that they have the fastest Corvette that competes with other "super cars." LOL
I would buy a ZR1 just to say that I owned one and then sell it after a year. I bet many people do the same. I don't like to be static and keep something forever.
Like others have mentioned, many people don't know the difference between a C6 couple, GS, Z06, ZR1, or any Corvettes. People have told me that they liked my old C5 Z06 and thought that it was a 500HP race car. Really? lol
Hell... I'd much rather had a modded C6Z or a extremely built base C6 than a ZR1 for much less.
Yes, the 997 911 Porsches are over-rated but are extremely sexy cars. It's a status thing...
