I'm looking at trading for an '07 Vert and I noticed rust on what looks to be some sort of bracket located dead center of the open trunk down in the "rain gutter" (If you will) on front side of car.
I've searched for this and haven't found much info on it, other than some people have reported having this rust. I have the following questions:
(1) Has anyone had this issue and resolved it? What was the solution?
I just looked at mine and my '05 looks nothing like that. All painted original black and even the trunk lid looks different as the trunk lid cover appears to be removed on yours.
Do you live or was the car located near the coast?
I checked mine, it is painted black with no rust. To remove the rust just take it apart/off then scrub with a wire brush or Dremel wire wheel, then put on a couple of coats of gloss black paint. Or you could treat it with a rust remover-catalyst ...

I would do this but you still need to remove it, IMHO.
I have the exact same problem as mine which is an '06. Completely rusted on both sides and the center part seems ok. It looks almost as if the protective coating pealed off.
I am thinking the car sat outside at some point, and that is the reason for it. It is in the rain gutter, so it would get wet if it got water on it, or even at a car wash. Let me know how you make out as I haven't tried to replace or have it covered under warranty.
I have heard of other people posting about the same thing and having the same problem so I would think that it relates to moisture exposure over multiple times in a damp climate.
My 2007 convert has no problem with rust there but the car has spent it's entire life in Tucson Arizona so that may have something to do with it still looking like new.
I've got this exact problem on my early 2007 vert (delivered late Aug 2006). It's easy to see, but next to impossible to get to safely with a wire brush, Dremel tool, etc. I'd like to fix it, but I'm almost afraid the only way is a major reassembly.
That part is riveted in place, difficult to remove. It is not an important piece and can be touched up with a brush. Use it as leverage in getting a good price, but a little rust on it is meaningless.

It IS NOT riveted, there's a single hex bolt holding it on. You have to raise the Tonnoue (spelling?) then you can access the bolt and remove the device ...

OK, I can feel a hole underneath, so without inspecting further, I'll go along with your info. Thanks!
This means that some rust on the piece is even less important...use it to get a better price and then don't worry about it.
FYI: Body Shop and Parts guys identified the part as "Folding top stow compartment lid bracket". Part # 10-40-5605, $9.61. Body shop guy checking to see if it's covered under corrosion warranty.
Of course, it is not covered under warranty. The part is cheap, now how to replace it? Even the body shop guy's not sure, though he wants me to drop by and let one of the tech's take a look at it (no charge).
