I got several just for this exact reason. Playmate wouldn't fit, so got the Rubbermaid 201A which was about the same capacity. I also have 3 soft-coolers that were pretty large and just fit ...
But doesn't the cooler chest in the right seat keep the beer within easy reach? (memories of my 1960's dad who would drive, drink beer, and smoke. Of course, none of us kids wore seat belts). Good luck finding the correct sized cooler.
Thanks for the heads up on the Rubbermaid. I didn't know they made coolers. I looked at the soft ones but I am afraid that they will leak when the ice melts. I am thinking that I will end up with a soft one and cut down a plastic tub to hold the water.

The soft cooler we have has a plastic tub that fits inside the cooler already, don't know what brand it is. It also fits down inside the left side store area under the rear mat, out of site.
My only issue is the soft coolers do no keep ice, it melts very fast. We use an igloo brand cooler now, it fits in the coupe. 28 quart Igloo Breeze:
I have a hat that holds both beers so I dont have to take my hand off the steering wheel. Or I have a backpack with a straw that I use so again, no hands of the steering wheel.

Remember snoozing on the shelf behind the rear seat. DON'T SAY PROJECTILE!!! IT IS NOT FUNNY!!!
I had the same problem at the Northeast ALMS races at Lime Rock over the weekend. I tried to get the wife to sit in the trunk so I could put the cooler on the seat but she said NO. Ended up with a cooler that was about a quarter of an inch to high, the trunk closed but stuck up a little. Next time I'll need to get a little smaller cooler or a wife that will ride in the trunk.
Search for Polar Coolers on the intranet. They a great soft sided cooler, don't leak, and don't sweat on the outside either. I have 3 of them and use them all the time. They're great.
