Default fob programming failed

I know there have been plenty of posts about programming C6 fobs, and I have followed all suggestions to the "T" without success. Here's my story. (it's short) My 2008 coupe came with only 1 fob so I bought another from a reputable online parts dealer. It came with a fully charged battery. I just want to add it as the next fob. Following forum members and GMs procedures, the DIC says "Ready for fob #3". (which it should) But there are no beeps indicating the fob has been programmed. There is just silence and the DIC still reads "Ready for fob #3" until it times out after about 5 minutes. Like other forum members, I am hesitant to completely erase the current program and set up my 2 fobs as #1 and #2. Does anyone have any suggestions or shall I drive it to my dealer's lot and perform the complete erase. At least if I fail there, they can push it in the shop and only rip me off for the reprogramming service. Help!

I'd really suggest a full program. Otherwise there's a fob out there with your car's name on it.

I had the same issue (1 fob), bought 2 at the dealer for $90 ea. and they programmed for a 1/2 hour labor charge.

You are right of course about the risk of the other fob being out there. I would have no problem performing the full program but I'm not comfortable doing it at home since I was unable to add the new fob to the system. Sounds like I'll need to bite the bullet. It shouldn't be this hard. Thanks

i'd try 1 thing. swap batteries in working fob with new fob , try working fob with doors/starting to verify battery was good from the new one. (or put a new one in new fob) check that metal fingers are actually pressing on battery when new fob is closed back up.

you tried steps 1 - 10 here... right?
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-c...tructions.html

you had car in park/reverse.. right?
your car is a domestic and not canadian/european.. right?

Just did a 2008 short program and used this (worked great - thanks cclive):

Here are the two procedures :C6 Fob Programming, Simple short programming instructions. You use these instructions when you have a working fob and just want to add another fob to the system.

1. Car off
2. Trunk open
3. Glove box open
4. Put working fob on console next to shifter (the one you are currently using to drive the car) IMPORTANT. Also make sure no cell phones are in the car.
5. Put key in trunk keyhole and turn key five times in less than 5 seconds.
6. DIC will now beep (not always) and light up and say “Ready for fob 3”.
7. Put new unprogrammed fob in slot by glove box with buttons facing right (passenger) side.
8. Wait and watch DIC. When it says “Ready for fob 4” it is done. Up to four Fobs may be programmed to the car total.
9. When all Fobs are programmed, push OFF/ACC (bottom half of start button) to turn off DIC.
10. Test all four buttons on fob and then take away all other fobs and check car starting with new fob(s).

I would also use the long version to remove any existing FOBs you don't know about.

EDIT: Are you sure the slot is working?

"Once you have proved that the slot is working, you should be able to re-program using the long procedure without much worry.

Basically the check of the slot involves starting the procedure to add fob#3 and then presenting an already known fob to the car. If the slot is working, the car will say "KNOWN FOB". The only way the system can do that is through the slot...not from just having the fob in the seating area of the car...ergo, slot works. So read and follow that procedure and then you can go to the long procedure which will wipe out all fobs and let you start anew. The reason that checking the slot is important is that if you start the LONG procedure and then the slot isn't working, you will have wiped out all fobs and then will have no way to re-program them back into the system."

I've been through this, and the programming proceedures outlined in th owners manual, aren't exactly perfect. I bought the car new, and when trying the no 2 fob a bit later, didn't work. I did the basic program to add a fob, and no problem. For some odd reason, did something later, and none of the fobs worked. Did the long proceedure using the hatch key, and all is fine now. Sure it was somehow my screw up, but wouldn't do any kind of programming, if not having the key availible.

Here is a step/action table that re-formats Clive's instructions. Same info, presented differently.

>>C6 Fob Programming and Glove Box Slot Testing Procedures<<

Aftermarket radios can cause an issue when you try to get into the programming mode. The radio triggers a code that the radio security feature is not talking to the ECM properly. If you have an aftermarket radio and did not buy the harness for the door beeps and OnStar, you might NOT be able to get into programming mode.

Thanks guys. I will check the slot as suggested. Stay tuned.

I am sure you have this covered, but just to be sure (again from cclive based on the short steps posted):

"To make sure that the glove box slot is working, follow steps 1-6. Then in step 7 you insert one of the fobs that is currently programmed to the car into the slot. If the slot is presented with a fob that is ALREADY programmed to the car, the DIC will say “Known Fob”.

This shows us that the slot is working correctly by recognizing this fob. Push the bottom half of the start button to end the session if you were just testing the slot for proper operation."
